Many people in the UK are already feeling the impact of climate change. For underserved communities, it manifests in high energy bills, a cost of living crisis, and homes that aren't well insulated - too cold in the winter, too hot in the summer. While climate action requires some people to reduce their emissions by doing less of certain activities, it's not fair to demand the same of those who already have little. And this is embedded in the concept of a just transition, says Gosbert Chagula MBE, co-founder at Startup Discovery School. The Willow Review recommendations are here! Sustainability is a key commercial opportunity for small businesses, but too many are missing out. The independent, government-backed Willow Review has today unveiled 10 new recommendations to help UK small businesses make the most of the financial benefits of sustainability. Last year Small Business Britain and BT’s research found that over 75% of small businesses don’t yet see sustainability as a growth opportunity, yet thanks to Willow Review research we know businesses that embrace it experience benefits such as lower costs, better customer engagement, and increased investment opportunities. The new proposals for government, financial services and small businesses aim to make sustainability simpler, more accessible, and financially rewarding for small firms across the UK. AWARD Climate Action Fellowship launches with 47 African women professionals from Benin, Cameroon, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi, and Senegal. This two-year program addresses a critical gap: increasing women's leadership in climate action while developing agricultural innovations that meet the specific needs of women smallholders across Africa. By equipping these fellows with leadership skills and gender integration expertise, AWARD is building a powerful network of climate leaders who understand the unique challenges facing African agricultural systems. When we empower women in agricultural research and development, we create more effective, equitable climate solutions. Looking forward to seeing the innovations that emerge from this cohort! The sustainable transition has to include people in an equitable way. Enter the just transition, which is about ensuring that nobody is left behind; upholding human rights, minimising negative impacts on workers, and boosting equality and opportunity. In this week’s episode, Giulia interviews Gosbert Chagula MBE, co-founder and head of programmes at the Startup Discovery School. He also sits on the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s SME Engagement Group, which advises the government on issues and opportunities relating to entrepreneurship and small business. Giulia and Gosbert discuss the role of entrepreneurship in driving the transition, the implications of climate justice, and the effectiveness of global events, such as the World Economic Forum in Davos, in fostering action and championing diversity. A year ago, in February 2024, the Labour party pledged to introduce a Race Equality Bill, should it come to power. That promise was also included in its manifesto. Fast-forward, a year later, we’re expecting to see it come to the House – after it was mentioned in the King’s Speech, in July 2024👀 This is a significant step-forward – a promising start, for our new Government.
