Last week, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte gave local economic developers the opportunity to see first hand how their facilities drive innovation and assist with industry recruitment and growth. We toured the BATT CAVE, CIPHER, EPIC, CPM, and CICOM (see below). UNC Charlotte is a great partner in our state and region and we are thankful for it’s support in our economic development efforts (it’s also a plus I’m a former Niner💚🤙🏽). Yesterday marked the 25th anniversary of #GISDay across the globe. Karen Andres, Researcher Coordinator at the EDC, demonstrated to local students and visitors the importance of GIS in economic development. Geographic Information Systems (GIS) play a crucial role in our industry by providing tools that help make informed decisions based on spatial data. Karen uses GIS daily to help drive economic development in the site selection process for foreign and local firms by analyzing factors like proximity to transportation networks, access to labor markets, regional demographics, site analysis, and more! Gaston County Manager Matthew Rhoten and Gaston County EDC Executive Director Donny Hicks presented Tuesday at Get Ready Gaston about how Gaston County Government is stepping up to bat as the region attracts more businesses and residents. Featured speakers also included City of Gastonia Manager Michael Peoples and City of Mount Holly, North Carolina Manager Jonathan Blanton. GTIS Partners LP ("GTIS"), a global real estate investment firm with a focus on residential and industrial/logistics investments, is taking the lead on developing a $27 million, 170,000-square foot warehouse and distribution center site on Cox Road known as Project Nexus. This site is located within a Qualified Opportunity Zone (“QOZ”) in the city of Gastonia. QOZs are undercapitalized areas within the United States that could benefit from targeted economic development and job creation. Project completion is expected by the end of 2026.
