About us
Georgia 811 is a nonprofit corporation dedicated to preventing damage to Georgia's underground utilities and promoting public safety. We function as a communication system, connecting our member utility companies with professional excavators and homeowners who are planning mechanized digging activity such as excavation, tunneling, grading, boring and demolition. Although it is not required by Georgia law to notify the Georgia 811 if a smaller, non-mechanized digging project is planned, we encourage residents to do so to ensure their personal safety and the safety of those around them. These projects can include installing a fence, deck, swing set or mail box; planting trees or landscaping. This notification system provides Georgia 811 members an opportunity to locate and identify any underground facilities they may have in an area where digging is planned. Call before you dig. The law protects us all. Georgia law mandates that, before beginning any mechanized digging or excavation work, you must contact Georgia 811 by calling 811 or 1-800-282-7411 at least 48 hours but no more than 10 working days in advance to have utility lines marked. Professional excavators may take a short training class and use EDEN to enter their locate requests online. Homeowners may apply online using the eTicket. Both are located on our website: www.Georgia811.com

To All Georgia 811 Members: Extraordinary Circumstances In preparation for impacts from a forecasted winter storm that is expected to occur on Friday, January 10th, we have outlined the steps for declaring Extraordinary Circumstances below. Occasionally, Georgia 811 Members may need to declare Extraordinary Circumstances to inform excavators that they are unable to mark underground facilities as required by law. When this happens, the affected member will respond to PRIS using code 3J to notify the excavator of their situation. To declare Extraordinary Circumstances, please fill out the form on our website at https://lnkd.in/e4_-yaqK To declare Extraordinary Circumstances, the member must meet the criteria as described in the Georgia Underground Facility Protection Act: § 25-9-3. Definitions 14) “Extraordinary circumstances” means circumstances other than normal operating conditions which exist and make it impractical or impossible for a facility owner or operator to comply with the provisions of this chapter. Such extraordinary circumstances may include, but shall not be limited to, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, ice and snow, and acts of God. After declaring Extraordinary Circumstances with Georgia 811, members must still respond to all applicable requests with the PRIS code 3J. Notifying Georgia 811 is only one step in the process. Extraordinary Circumstances is not fully invoked until utility members respond to any/all locate requests, during their specified time period, with that code. Once the Extraordinary Circumstance has passed, the member must update all instances of 3J responses to the applicable PRIS code. When a member declares EC during normal business hours (Monday to Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.), the Extraordinary Circumstance (EC) will be added to the current Georgia 811 List of EC Declarations during the same business day. When a member declares EC outside of normal business hours, the Extraordinary Circumstance will be added to the Georgia 811 List of EC Declarations no later than 10 a.m. on the next business day.

Georgia 811 reposted this
👀 “I know that people say that this is just another administrative step and we don’t have time in the schedule, but it’s important that we make time to follow the proper procedures." Have you seen our latest #811BeforeYouDig influencer's important message? Our Education & Marketing Committee, led by Washington Gas's Rosemary Langowski and Georgia 811's Megan Estes, championed CGA's new influencer outreach program and tapped Underground Service Alert of Northern California & Nevada's Collin Miyadi to head up the task team. In the wise words of @highlightertiff on TikTok, "Not only can contacting 811 be a matter of life or death, but you face the risk of reputational and financial damages by skipping this very simple step.”
🙋♀️ I was a late adopter of TikTok, and I still find it scarily "sticky." But seeing construction influencers like @highlightertiff reach our target audience with authentic content has been eye-opening. When videos about safe digging practices and #811beforeyoudig generate hundreds of thousands of views from people who actually work in construction – and spark real engagement – you see the potential for breakthrough impact without the cost burdens of mass-market strategies. We need fresh and effective approaches to reaching excavators where they are. Excited to keep exploring these new channels with partners who share our commitment to damage prevention. Creating meaningful change means trying unexpected platforms and strategies. Glad to be working alongside Lisa O'Leary on this outreach! #DamagePrevention #ConstructionSafety #EveryDigEveryTime
