Simple way to understand halving and its significance. #Bitcoin #BTC #Blockchain
What is “halve” or "halving" or "halvening"? The #bitcoin halving is an event in which the mining reward for #bitcoin is reduced by half. This reduction occurs about every four years or after 210,000 new blocks. #Bitcoin halving is designed to reduce the rate of new #bitcoin creation, maintaining one of its key properties "Scarcity" The first reward was 50 bitcoins, which has been halved several times since: Nov. 28, 2012, to 25 bitcoins July 9, 2016, to 12.5 bitcoins May 11, 2020, to 6.25 bitcoins This reward reduces to 3.125 BTC. What happens when no more bitcoins are left? The last Bitcoin is expected to be mined in 2140. The reward will decrease as halving continues until the smallest bitcoin denomination, one “satoshi” (0.00000001 bitcoin), remains, and the total supply equals 21 million. Then miners will be rewarded exclusively with fees for processing transactions and will earn no newly created bitcoin.
