GiANT is a global media and content development company specializing in leader transformation. Working in over 100 countries, our vision is to unlock the potential of people. We're here to take your leaders to higher levels. Our vision (or "heroic goal" as we like to call it) is to raise up liberating leaders in every major city and every major sector of the world. To do this, we focus on 1) Increasing the number of secure leaders inside an organization 2) Raising the leadership capacity of those leaders, and 3) Accelerating the growth of the leadership culture of these organizations.   • What happens when certain “Voices” in your organization are not represented properly? Let’s take a closer look at what happens when the Connector voice is over or under-represented. The Connector Under-Represented When a Connector is under-represented on a team, it usually comes as a result of their feeling like their connections won’t be seen as valuable to the project. When Connectors aren’t sharing their ideas, the team risks losing opportunities for collaboration and external support. Losing these opportunities limits the team’s reach and resources to accomplish their goal. For example, the Connector’s suggestion for who or what team might be good at performing a certain aspect of a project can go unsaid, which could lead to the team missing out on performing at their best possible level. The Connector Over-Represented When Connectors are over-represented on your team, though, there are a different set of risks involved. As you might expect, all of those connections can end up as distractions instead of useful to the team. Also, a Connector’s excitement about certain ideas can cause them to come across as “salesy”. This can lead to a lack of trust from certain team members, causing them to not voice their opinions and, potentially causing their Voice to be under-represented. When this happens, the Connectors might be energized by all the potential connections they can use to help the team, but the rest of the team is confused and losing sight of the main mission. Optimal Representation But what about when the representation is just right? As Connectors grow into their Voice and the unique role they play on the team, they bring tremendous value to it. When the team culture encourages Connectors to constructively share their connections that might be helpful to the team, while not letting them get carried away, the team thrives. In this situation, a Connector’s ability to help people understand each other can be a true asset to the team. When Connectors contribute to that healthy balance between other Voices on the team, a team’s effectiveness increases dramatically. As with every Voice, Connectors are vital to their team’s success. Each Voice is necessary for a well-functioning team. Understanding these insights will help you empower those Connectors on your team to contribute their best and receive fulfillment in their role on the team. This time, let’s take a closer look at what happens when it’s the Guardian that is over- or under-represented. The Guardian Under-Represented When a Guardian is under-represented on a team, it usually comes as a result of their feeling like their potential cautions and suggestions for mitigating risk won’t be received. A team runs several risks when Guardians aren’t sharing their ideas. For example, the Guardian’s detailed-oriented ideas and risk assessments go unheard, which could lead to the team forging ahead with an idea before it’s actually ready for implementation. While this might be more natural to other Voices, like the Creative, Pioneer, and Connector, it risks the success of the team in the long run. The Guardian Over-Represented When Guardians are over-represented on your team, though, there are a different set of dangers to be aware of. As you might imagine, all of those detail-oriented minds focus on the limitations of an idea or innovation. Also, a Guardian’s focus on risk can prevent the team from taking necessary risks for progress. This can lead to a lack of innovation and could even create a culture of interrogation instead of openness and trust. When this happens, the Guardians might be energized by all the systems and security of risk avoidance, but the rest of the team is stifled. Optimal Representation But what about when the representation is just what it should be? As Guardians grow into their Voice and the unique role they play on the team, they bring tremendous value to it. When the team culture encourages Guardians to constructively share their concerns and ideas for stabilizing processes, while not letting them get carried away, the team thrives. In this situation, a Guardian’s insight is an essential safeguard for the team. When Guardians contribute to that healthy balance between safeguards and necessary risk, a team’s effectiveness increases dramatically. As with every Voice, Guardians are vital to their team’s success. Each Voice is necessary for a well-functioning team. This time, let’s take a closer look at what happens when it’s the Creative that’s out of balance:

  • Be Present. Celebrate Fully. Liberate Others. In the busyness of the season, it’s easy to rush through moments with those we lead and love. But true connection happens when we are fully present, choosing to celebrate the unique value of each person at the table. At GiANT, we encourage the practice of a Celebration Dinner—a simple yet powerful way to liberate others by honoring them. Choose a topic or a person, and take turns sharing what you appreciate, admire, or celebrate about them. This intentional act of uninterrupted presence fosters deeper relationships and creates a culture of gratitude, affirmation, and freedom. As you might imagine, all of those great, innovative ideas can be overwhelming for a team if they are mentioned too close together. This can lead to an overload of ideas without any actionable outcome because the team is overwhelmed with possibilities. When this happens, the Creatives might be energized by all those possibilities, but the rest of the team is paralyzed. There are just too many possibilities with too little firm direction. Optimal Representation But what about when the representation is just right? As Creatives grow into their Voice and the unique role they play on the team, they bring tremendous value to it. When the team culture encourages Creatives to share their innovations in appropriate doses, always making sure to flesh them out to the point of action or show them to be unactionable, the team thrives. In this situation, the Creative’s futuristic thinking is balanced with the present needs of the team. When Creatives contribute to that healthy balance between innovation and current needs, a team’s effectiveness increases dramatically. As with every Voice, Creatives are vital to their team’s success. Each Voice is necessary for a well-functioning team. Understanding these insights will help you empower those Creatives on your team to contribute their best and receive fulfillment in their role on the team.
