I was proud to join Maimah Karmo of Tigerlily Foundation in authoring a new opinion piece published this week in the Richmond Times-Dispatch. In the piece, we highlight how state prescription drug affordability boards (#PDABs) have yet to demonstrate real savings for patients at the pharmacy counter and instead create barriers to accessing lifesaving treatments. Here are three key takeaways Maimah and I share in the piece: ➡️ Upper payment limits (also known as UPLs), the singular tool many PDABs can use to set prices, will NOT lower out-of-pocket costs for patients and could negatively impact the supply chain. ➡️ The impact of these boards would be particularly acute for older Americans if PDABs continue to focus on medicines that help patients manage chronic conditions and comorbidities. ➡️ Virginia lawmakers must prioritize solutions that provide real relief to patients at the pharmacy without negatively impacting treatment access today and in the future. Policies that advance health equity, promote opportunities for healthy aging, and enable the development of treatments that can support the silver economy are essential. We must continue to work toward this goal in the upcoming legislative session in my home state of Virginia and in states across the country. Antimicrobial resistance (#AMR) threatens to undermine the very foundation of modern medicine, including advances in cancer care. Patients undergoing cancer treatments often have compromised immune systems and rely on effective antibiotics to prevent or treat infections, but infection is now the second leading cause of death in patients with cancer. This powerful new video shares the impact of AMR on people living with cancer and highlights the importance of addressing AMR for cancer patients everywhere. Watch now at https://lnkd.in/efCcbDAm

What is the true cost of Respiratory Syncytial Virus (#RSV) in older adults across APEC? A new white paper from IQVIA, developed in collaboration with GSK and the Global Coalition on Aging (GCOA), examines the significant economic and clinical burden of RSV in older adults in select high-income APEC countries. The study found that an average of 1 in 500 older adults were hospitalized annually with RSV, leading to an estimated 778,000 hospitalizations and USD 2.8 billion in costs in 2023. The highest burden was observed in China, followed by Japan and Canada. The paper and its findings highlight the critical need for dedicated surveillance systems and standardized diagnostic practices for #RSV across the #APEC region. At GCOA member TIAA Institute’s Fellows Symposium “Framing the future of higher education,” speakers highlighted the changes higher education institutions can and must make to adapt to a changing world – including population aging. Surya Kolluri, Head of TIAA Institute and James Appleby, CEO of Gerontological Society of America (GSA), discussed the importance of age inclusivity in higher education – ensuring that all ages are welcome on college and university campuses. These changes help to broaden the pool of students for universities, provide upskilling opportunities for mid-career students, and also help prepare students of all ages for the multigenerational workforce that awaits when they leave school. Other speakers also covered the potential of AI to help increase availability of asynchronous learning which is particularly important for mature students, and the importance of caregiving benefits for employers and employees – as covered by TIAA and GCOA’s report on tailored benefits for employees across the life course (https://lnkd.in/eYunzeTv). Check out TIAA Institute’s website for more resources on how higher ed is adapting to the global demographic shift. #TIAAInstFellows #HigherEd
