The COP29 Presidency has launched the COP29 Declaration on Reducing Methane from Organic Waste to supplement the Global Methane Pledge. Supporters have declared their commitment to set sectoral targets to reduce methane from organic waste within future National Determined Contributions. These supporters are also working toward developing and implementing subnational policies, roadmaps and action plans, and mobilizing financial resources. The Declaration is being developed with the Global Methane Pledge Secretariat and GMI Partner, the Climate & Clean Air Coalition. https://loom.ly/UBDm9ns

One of the key initiatives at COP29 is Methane Reduction from Organic Waste. In 2022, global food waste food waste generated up to 10% of global greenhouse gas emissions. The world needs rapid and sustained reductions in methane emissions to accelerate and substantially reduce non-CO2 emissions globally by 2030. Methane has more than 28 times the warming power of carbon dioxide. Fast action to cut methane emissions can help curb global warming. Since 2004, GMI has helped reduce methane emissions by approximately 670 million metric tons through multiple sectors, including biogas. Indore, ranked India’s cleanest city since 2017, is a model for #WasteManagement and reducing #methane emissions. GMI, with the support of the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), published a video on Indore’s waste management keys to success, a companion to a recently published case study. The video explores the city's advancements in sustainable waste management, which helps reduce methane, support local jobs, and improve public health.
