Co-founders Lara Mani and Mike Cassidy made the Economist today. A large eruption that could cause global climate chaos, might come about every 400-600 years - so it's unlikely to happen in 2025, but over the next century e.g. our children's lifetime, it has a 16-25% likelihood. Put it another way, if there was a roll of a dice chance that your house would fall down, you want to do something about it. The problem is - we're not! The Hunga Tonga eruption in 2022 should have been our wake up call. The closest seismometers were more than 700 km away and we were not prepared for the impacts that followed. Now imagine a larger eruption in more populated area, and the global consequences this would have, e.g. extreme climate shock. The world invests so little in volcano preparedness compared with other global risks like Asteroid impacts and yet volcanic eruptions of this magnitude are hundreds of times more likely. Preparing communities well in advance of volcanic eruptions can help save lives and reduce financial impacts in the aftermath. The wider volcanological community is doing incredible work to help prepare communities around the world to face volcanic risk. However, often we lack the funding and resources to make these efforts sustainable or to enable us to scale them. For this reason, supporting efforts to build community preparedness is a key priority of Global Volcano Risk Alliance. We are Global Volcano Risk Alliance a new charity organisation working to build global resilience to volcanic eruptions. Our mission is to safeguard millions of lives through regional and international preparedness, monitoring, and advocacy. Representing a community working on volcanoes or concerned by the risks, Global Volcano Risk Alliance (GVRA) aims to coordinate efforts to mitigate volcanic risk and enhance global preparedness. The global impacts from volcanic eruptions - such as famines, economic disruptions, and climate shocks - are underestimated. As a result, volcanic threats receive limited attention and funding, especially as many of the world’s most hazardous volcanoes are in lower-income regions. Early-warning systems and proactive risk management can save billions in emergency aid, economic recovery, and infrastructure repair. By investing in preparedness, we can avoid widespread damage, loss of life, and costly interventions, making it a smarter, more efficient approach than reacting to volcanic eruptions after they occur.
