We are a grant management software company, but we don't exist just because grants need to be managed. We exist because people need to be served, diseases need to be cured, and technology needs to be advanced. It just so happens that these initiatives are funded by grants. As #grant funders and recipients, it's so easy to get bogged down in the endless cycles of applying, measuring, and reporting (especially if these processes are being done manually) and forget WHY you're doing it. No matter how many RFPs you read, applications you submit, reports you generate, or outcomes you measure, never forget that you're moving humanity forward one grant-funded initiative at a time. That is your WHY. And you are ours.

In this episode of the Hearts & Sciences podcast, I take a deep dive with Ansley Fender of Grantcycle into strategies for coping, thriving, and reaping rewards despite high rejection rates in competitive grants. Not to be missed: ➡ The one thing hardly anyone does that vastly improves your outcomes ➡ The only two things you need to avoid so you don't waste your time We focus specifically on researchers applying for grant funding, but the discussion applies equally to grant seekers in the non-profit and small-business realms. --- 🌟About me: I'm Elisabeth, a coach and trainer helping brilliant people lead fulfilling lives through radical self-knowledge, crucial communication skills, and rock-solid boundaries.

When is the best time to put grant management practices in place? It's not after you receive a grant... 👇 A lot of people don't think about managing a grant until after they receive one. But that's too late. Once you receive an award notice, the work begins. Because there usually isn't much time between the award notice and the start date. This is especially true for grants paid as reimbursements. The best time to put grant management practices into place is when you're writing applications. Why? 1. The worst time to think about grant management practices is when you're overwhelmed with grant management. At Grantcycle, we always advise people to prepare for 5x the amount of grant funding they have or are applying for. 2. It eliminates the very common problem of "there are so many grants we qualify for, but we aren't applying because we can't manage them all." 3. Many grant applications ask you to describe your grant and financial management controls. And the more complete and clear your answer is, the better your chance of receiving the funding. 4. Burnout is real, and burning out your employees with manual and spreadsheet-based grant management isn't worth it. 5. Typically, you can write the cost of grant management software into your grant budgets. You can usually do this after you've received funding, but grant budget amendments can be tedious. 6. Manual workflows that rely completely on people are risky. People get sick, go on vacation, or move on to new jobs. I've seen grant recipients not able to make payroll because they got so behind on grant reimbursement requests. If you're dealing with any of these issues or have questions about grant management best practices, comment below or send me a message. I'd love to offer help and advice, even if you're not in the market for grant management software.

Many grant seekers have a bigger problem than lack of funding - they don't have the broad, organizational strategy in place to be successful once they win. Join us for a talk with Remer Brinson, Founder of Good Plan, as we talk about how organizational strategy, team dynamics, innovation, and storytelling play a huge role in grant success and implementation- and how to get better at doing the big thinking yourself.
