Today we remember the incredible life and legacy of Rosemary Kowalski, founder of The RK Group, as she truly embodied the special spirit of San Antonio. Rosemary who turned 100 this year was truly a trailblazer as she changed the catering landscape with her innovative menus, creative flair and attention to detail when she started her catering business approximately 80 years ago. Along with her son Greg and their 800+ employees, Rosemary built one of the most respected and recognized catering and special event service businesses across the U.S. with 17 divisions and operations in Europe. An indefatigable businesswoman, philanthropist and community booster, Rosemary was known for working hard all day long and then showing up for every community event in the evening – many times attending three or four events in an evening! She was proud of the high-profile galas and dinners her company handled and loved to tell stories about serving U.S. Presidents, the Queen of England II, Pope John Paul II and countless other dignitaries throughout her career. Rosemary was equally known for her many good works in the community as served on dozens of nonprofit boards and volunteered for many other organizations. In 2011, she was honored at the Greater Chamber’s Tribute to Women Business Leaders for her incredible success in business and her commitment to the community. That was one of countless awards she received throughout her career. It was our honor to know and work with Rosemary over the years, and we’ll keep her family in our hearts and remember her indominable spirit and legacy for years to come.

Today, our CEO Jeff Webster was proud to be the only representative for the business community to speak to City Council on the proposed amendments to the SBEDA program supporting small business development. The Greater Chamber emphasized this effort has already accomplished much in growing local businesses, but the proposed changes do not address the remaining disparities. We encourage the City to balance the needs of our current employers with helping to grow new businesses. Thanks to his leadership, we’ve helped move San Antonio forward by leading a successful SA to DC trip, hosting the first-ever State of the Region, creating a new program to support military families (SMF.SA), helping to secure a direct flight to DC, bringing the Warrior Games to San Antonio, playing a key role in the successful passage of Prop C, expanding the Chamber’s social media reach, working with city and county leaders on business retention strategies, and so much more. He will tell you his “crowning” achievement is building a great team, and that starts at the top with great leadership! We extend our heartfelt condolences to the Peak family as we honor the life and legacy of former Mayor Howard Peak. Mayor Peak’s visionary efforts in the 1990s gave rise to San Antonio’s expansive system of public walking and biking trails. As a dedicated member of the Zoning Commission and District 9’s City Council representative, he fought for the preservation of flood zones along Salado Creek, Leon Creek, and the Medina River, transforming them into spaces for our community. Mayor Peak will be deeply missed, but his legacy will live on for future generations of San Antonians.
