All water supply systems have multiple points where #contaminants could enter the water and make it #unfit_for_drinking and generally #unsafe. A #multi_barrier_approach to safe consumable water is an excellent way to ensure that water is safe when it reaches, for example, a user's glass. At Green Conceptions Africa (GCA) we leverage the invaluable resources made available, and the expertise of the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST) for boosting community outreach, engagement and empowerment for a guaranteed good health with regards to disease outbreak and spread among populations. The Darién Gap is in one of the most remote and challenging regions on earth, where safe drinking water is critical to survival. Luckily, our partners are there to help. Check out our blog post about how CAWST supports our partners, Norwegian Refugee Council, International Committee of the Red Cross - ICRC, United Nations, USAID - Bureau for Humanitarian Assistance, by adapting our training for local needs. https://bit.ly/3V9MRqo

Innovative Solutions and Best Practices for food security and community development. 💡 Africa's Green Renaissance 🌍 Did you know that Africa is not just a victim of climate change, but a leader in climate action? At COP29, African nations showcased their commitment to a sustainable future. Rwanda, for example, is championing climate-resilient economic development, particularly in agriculture. By adopting climate-smart practices, Rwanda aims to ensure food security while reducing greenhouse gas emissions. But the challenges are immense: Africa, though a minor contributor to global emissions, is disproportionately affected by climate change. From extreme weather events to water scarcity, the continent is facing a crisis. So, what’s the solution? African nations are embracing a dual approach: 👉 Building resilience: Investing in infrastructure, early warning systems, and disaster preparedness. 👉 Driving sustainable development: Transitioning to green and blue economies, promoting renewable energy, and supporting sustainable agriculture. ✨ What innovative climate solution inspires you the most? Share your thoughts and let's spark a conversation about the future of sustainability in Africa. #Sustainability #Innovation #GreenSolutions #Africa #ClimateAction

#Safe_water is an important factor for consideration with regards to access to education and professional productivity. People without access to potable water tend to spend more time traveling forth and back in order to fetch water. Sicknesses caused by drinking #unsafe_water cost people more of their time and other resources, including finances; they tend to spend more time in their homes recovering and/or caring for sick family members. With #potable_water and #appropriate_sanitation_and_hygiene practices, people have a better chance of enjoying good health and well-being, as well as time for #education_and_productive_work. According to the World Health Organization, every one dollar ($1💰) invested in #Water_and_Sanitation sets in a $4.30 💰 💰... return, expected in the form of a reduction in medical expenses for people and society around the world. 🌎 At Green Conceptions Africa (GCA), we are committed to Sensitizing, Educating and Training local communities on affordable technologies for a better and sustainable future with regards to #Water_Sanitation_and_Hygiene_WASH_and_Quality_oriented_Environmental_Safety_and_Health_QHSE, with the mentorship of the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST), and collaboration with #Research_and_Development_Without_Borders_RDWB. Diarrhea is one of the most common health problems caused by pathogens in #unsafeWater. When children ingest pathogens (e.g. #Vibrio_cholerae) in contaminated water, they are vulnerable to infections. Diarrhea-related infections can cause inflammation of the intestines in children. Intestinal inflammation in children reduces the ability of their digestive system to absorb nutrients needed by their body from food. Without enough nutrients, children may be more vulnerable to infections. Recurring infections and malnutrition can contribute to stunted growth and impairment in children's mental development and behaviour. The Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST) is doing a great job to equip communities worldwide with relevant knowledge and technologies to better #WaterQuality and public health. Consideration to #Correct, #Consistent and #Continued use of an appropriate filtration system can be just a great means to combat diarrheal infections and their related consequences. From the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST), we would like to invite you to participate in the virtual exchange Implementing the Three-Star Approach: global experiences in WASH programs for schools. Join this virtual learning exchange to discover the transformative Three-Star Approach to water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) in schools. Developed by UNICEF in collaboration with governments, academic institutions and organizations around the world, this adaptable and sustainable model is designed to improve access to safe water, sanitation and hygiene practices, while helping to foster healthier and safer school environments. The event, co-organized by UNICEF Mexico and CAWST, will showcase how this impactful model has been successfully adapted and implemented in Chiapas and Chihuahua, uniting forces of school leaders, teachers, students, parents and local authorities, with a view to generating lasting collaboration and empowering communities to lead their own solutions. We will also have speakers who will tell us about the experiences of Venezuela, India and Kenya, to learn in greater detail about the strategies, practices and success stories, as a basis for adapting and improving the implementation of the Three Star Approach for WASH programs in schools, whether in Latin America or anywhere in the world. Date: Tuesday, November 26, 2024 Time: 8:00 am Mexico City time Kindly CLICK on the following link to learn more and register: https://lnkd.in/eZiVW_ep Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST)| Green Conceptions Africa (GCA)| #ResearchandDevelopmentWithoutBordersRDWB|

Exposure to #blackwater (also known as #Category3water), poses serious health and safety risks. Black water is wastewater that contains harmful contaminants such as human or animal waste, chemicals, and other dangerous substances. It is commonly found in sewage backups, floodwater from rivers or oceans, and untreated standing water. Let's take a look at some potential dangers of exposure👾👾🏞️🏞️ #Health Hazards #1. Pathogenic Microorganisms Bacteria🦠🦠: Examples include E. coli, Salmonella, and Campylobacter, which can cause severe gastrointestinal infections. Viruses: Such as norovirus, hepatitis A, and rotavirus, leading to diarrhea, vomiting, and liver infections. 👾👾Parasites: Exposure to parasites like Giardia or Cryptosporidium can cause prolonged intestinal illness. #2. Fungal Infections🦠🦠 Prolonged exposure to black water can promote mold growth, especially Aspergillus, which may lead to respiratory problems. #3. Toxic Substances Chemicals from industrial spills, cleaning agents, or pesticides can be present in black water, causing poisoning or skin irritation. #4. Inhalation Risks Aerosolized particles from black water (e.g., during cleanup) can be inhaled, introducing contaminants into the respiratory system. #5. Skin Infections Direct contact with black water may cause infections such as cellulitis or abscesses if there are cuts or abrasions on the skin. -------------------------------------------- #Environmental Dangers #1. Spread of Disease Contaminated water can infiltrate soil and water supplies, spreading pathogens to surrounding areas. #2. Toxic Mold Growth Black water can soak into building materials, fostering mold that compromises air quality and structural integrity. Community engagement in sustainable Latrine Design, Construction, proper use and maintenance are a sustainable means to curb #blackwaterflow due to faulty sanitary infrastructure. Thanks to the support of the Centre for Affordable Water and Sanitation Technology (CAWST), Canada in collaboration with #ResearchandDevelopmentWithoutBordersRDWBCameroon, this was made a central point of focus during the just ended week-long workshop on Latrine Design and Construction, and Fecal Sludge Management organized by RDWB in Yaounde Cameroon.
