It’s not exactly news that digital advertising is constantly evolving. Yet somehow, these developments hardly ever benefit publishers, most of whom live or die at the mercy of programmatic advertising. And it's historically been a race to the bottom... The checks and balances aren't working with regards to mis- and dis-information online, and this mayhem has already created a divide between social media and news content. However, throw in the threat of AI Overviews and GenAI Search tools which diminish traffic to, or totally cut out the end publishers - the ones by the way who are the value providers here - and it's a recipe for disaster. My POV here is that it's not fair to simply name and shame ‘high-emissions’ publishers. Yes there are some bad actors who should be removed (MFAs etc), but once that's done, collaboration, not exclusion, is the best way forward.
