To advance research and care for those living with Parkinson’s disease, Griffin Catalyst and the The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research (MJFF) had an ambitious goal: develop a new tool capable of visualizing—for the first time—a key protein found in the brains of those living with Parkinson’s disease. In March 2023, after a global competition, MJFF selected Merck as the winner of the Ken Griffin Alpha-synuclein Imaging Competition, unlocking an additional $1.5 million for the research team to advance the newly-developed imaging tracer for Parkinson’s disease to human trials. Building on its partnership with the University of Chicago Crime Lab, Griffin Catalyst has supported the creation of the Policing Leadership Academy (PLA), with one goal in mind: enhancing community safety. The PLA is a leadership and education program where police commanders and captains from around the country gather for five months of intensive training in management best practices, leveraging data and technology, and building community trust. Griffin Catalyst’s support for Boston Children's Hospital further enabled the development of a pioneering, new technique—mitochondrial transplantation—with the potential to meaningfully improve the heart function of infants with life-threatening conditions.
