Unwrapping your potential With the Christmas holidays approaching, our minds turn to what gifts we might be given by our loved ones or what gifts we might select for others. The phrase, ‘The tyranny of the gift giver’ is a powerful one to consider when buying gifts for other people. Giving someone a gift that they don’t like or want can create a tension. We can surely all relate to having to store an ugly ornament in a cupboard? You know what we mean, the hideous ornament that must be put on display when the Aunt that gave it to you visits for tea, otherwise, its absence would cause her offense for the rest of eternity. At work, we don’t often think of giving gifts to people other than a Secret Santa present with a maximum value of £5 often bought hurriedly from the petrol or railway station on the day of present exchange! The best work gifts are those that cost nothing but mean everything. For example, giving your team freedom to unleash their full potential, to deliver an important project that is deeply satisfying and value adding for all concerned. Our coaches can work with you and/or your team to unwrap potential at work. If you want to learn more about our coaching offer and how it can benefit you or a member of your team, please get in touch at www.grit.co.uk, we’d love to hear from you.

Returning to the scene of the crime In the latest episode of Coaching Stories – the podcast, Sheldon Daniels tells a flowing story that highlights the importance that space plays in a conversation and how rooms where difficult conversations were had can trigger an unwelcome response – a bit like returning to the scene of a crime. In this month’s Grit newsletter, Grit’s own Helen Buckwell writes about how to handle the triggers that can arise when a group of people spend a lot of time together, like families at Christmas, and how our working styles can direct our behaviour. Our coaches are skilled at working with clients to identify and manage unhelpful triggers in the workplace. If you would like to explore coaching for yourself or one of your team, please get in touch at www.grit.co.uk, we would love to hear from you.

Coaching Stories the Podcast Episode 18 – Sheldon Daniels In this episode, Sam’s guest is Sheldon Daniels. Sheldon’s stories touch upon the important conditions that need to be in place for good coaching to happen. In his flowing story, he talks about the importance of space and place. Goldfish bowl meeting rooms do not create the conditions for people to feel comfortable about accessing or revealing their vulnerability for fear of passersby witnessing them in that moment. It also doesn’t enable the coach to do their best work either! His flowing story highlights the importance of connection to ensure that the coaching is set up to work well from the outset. How do you lead a neurodivergent team? While Grit works in the field of Diversity, Equality and Inclusion (DEI), we do not profess to be a DEI specialist but nearly all our work has a DEI element to it. Effective leadership requires leaders to get the most from all the people that work with and for them which means they have to be inclusive in how they lead. The term inclusive leadership recognises the important job a leader has to execute to ensure the needs and talents of all team members are understood, deployed and encouraged. It is believed that nearly 1 in 5 people globally are neurodivergent. In this month’s newsletter, Dr Jane Freeman Hunt, best friend of Grit, writes an incredibly useful piece about leadership and autism.

Are you goal-less? In the latest episode of Coaching Stories – the podcast, Dr Travis Kemp debunks the myth that someone can’t be coached without a goal. Often getting to a goal is the aim of coaching and once clients have that level of clarity on what they want to achieve, they are off and running. If you or someone in your team is feeling rudderless or unsure as to what they want to do with their career at this point in time, our coaches can coach you to clarity. If you want to learn more about coaching offer and how it can benefit you or a member of your team, please get in touch at www.grit.co.uk, we’d love to hear from you.

What myths have you experienced? The election of a new American President means a period of transition will now follow for them personally and for their team. In the book, Lost in Transition by Richard Elsner and Bridget Farrands, they highlighted nine myths that surround leaders transitioning into a new role. One of these is the myth of independence – leaders don’t need help. Our coaches have worked with hundreds of transitioning leaders who have recognised that they need help to arrive and land well in their new role. If you would like to explore coaching for yourself or one of your team, please get in touch at www.grit.co.uk, we would love to hear from you.

Coaching Stories the Podcast Episode 17 – Dr Travis Kemp In this episode, Sam’s guest is Dr Travis Kemp. Travis’s stories share a theme – how we show up. In his flowing story, he speaks about his need to evolve himself professionally and personally over a number of years so that he could continue being useful to his client. In his falling story, he recalls a time when he was seduced by his client’s energy and self-drive which led him to overlook some key factors about the true state of her wellbeing. Not that old chestnut! There are many festivals that run through October and one that caught our eye was the Chestnut Festival in Soriano Nel Cimino in Italy. This festival celebrates medieval history and chestnut themed dishes are served to fuel the events. Our experience has shown us that coaching is a fabulous vehicle to explore some of the ‘old chestnuts’ that keep derailing performance or hold people back. If you want to explore old chestnuts either for yourself or for people in your organisation, we would love to hear from you, please get in touch at www.grit.co.uk #gritcoaching #coaching #leadershipcoaching #executivecoaching #teamcoaching

Are you Gready? This month we ran two Gready Clubs (which stands for The Grit Reading Club). Gready members were given access to the Gready Channel where they can watch an interview with the chosen books’ authors. The conversation was lively as the groups shared their views on their chosen books. Does the light shine on you? In the latest episode of Coaching Stories – the podcast, Patrick McCann speaks about the importance of confidence – knowing that you are seen and cared about at work. Our founder and CEO, Dr Sam Humphrey was invited to be a panellist at the Hays Macintyre Future Gen female event last month where the topic of confidence emerged as a dominant part of the conversation. Sam shared that low self-confidence is one of the most common issues that come up in coaching. She commented that telling someone they need to get more confidence is not useful because if it were that easy, people would be doing it! There are tips and techniques one can adopt to build self-confidence and Sam shared some of these with the group. If you want to learn more about how our one-to-one coaching or mastery workshops can help you or someone in your organisation build their self-confidence, please get in touch at www.grit.co.uk, we’d love to hear from you.
