Does the light shine on you? In the latest episode of Coaching Stories – the podcast, Patrick McCann speaks about the importance of confidence – knowing that you are seen and cared about at work. Our founder and CEO, Dr Sam Humphrey was invited to be a panellist at the Hays Macintyre Future Gen female event last month where the topic of confidence emerged as a dominant part of the conversation. Sam shared that low self-confidence is one of the most common issues that come up in coaching. She commented that telling someone they need to get more confidence is not useful because if it were that easy, people would be doing it! There are tips and techniques one can adopt to build self-confidence and Sam shared some of these with the group. If you want to learn more about how our one-to-one coaching or mastery workshops can help you or someone in your organisation build their self-confidence, please get in touch at www.grit.co.uk, we’d love to hear from you.

This is a great point! Criticism points out what’s wrong, often leaving the individual feeling defensive or disheartened. It’s about identifying mistakes without much direction on how to improve. Coaching, on the other hand, is about growth. It focuses on development, providing guidance and actionable feedback to help someone improve. It’s forward-looking, not just pointing out what went wrong, but empowering the person to do better next time. The key difference? Coaching inspires improvement, while criticism can sometimes leave us stuck. Let’s choose coaching over criticism!

“Let me give you some constructive criticism.” Reflect on the meaning of the words. Constructive = build up. Criticism = tear down. They can’t coexist. They’re antonyms. Let’s call it what it is: deconstructive criticism. It’s slung around without much skill or consideration. Ultimately, deconstructive criticism leaves the provider feeling superior and the receiver feeling diminished. Instead, let’s offer constructive coaching. Now our words and actions align. Constructive coaching requires thoughtfulness and skill. It also leaves the provider and the receiver feeling stronger and more energized. Small shift... Significant difference. *Lean/hear more: Podcast (13-minute listen), Deconstructive Criticism. Link in comments below. #reviveyourwork #criticism #coaching #professionaldevelopment Sarah Schlentz

Why wait a few weeks when you can wait years? A year or so ago I had the pleasure of a coaching conversation with Jude Schweppe and Gabe Ratliff. In the session, which was to be a potential episode for their podcast, they asked: "can't you write this into being", in other words could I share my thoughts and my process and see what people out there thought about it. "No, I need to do it sooner, I can't wait for that", I replied, not defensively but truly believing that I could get everything sorted by myself, much quicker. Fast forward to today, and spoiler, I didn't get there. And so, here today, I set the intention to do as they said. To share my thoughts and my process and invite you to come along on the journey with me. What's my aim? To change coaching and to do it my way. That insight is something that has bubbled up loud and clear in this year of waiting. I trained to be a coaching about eight years ago and have evolved so much since then, as a person but also the beliefs I hold about what coaching can achieve, and also, importantly, what it can not; about who coaching is for, and also, importantly, who it does not suit; and also about how I can coach, and how I can not coach. There is a lot in those little statements that I hope to share along the way. So this is a gentle invitation to join me as I rebuild literally from the ground up, creating a coaching practise that I think it bold, different and importantly bullshit free. I wish I had started when Jude and Gabe suggested, I also know that waiting a year was exactly what I needed to do. All businesses need a fallow period and that was/is mine. Now we see what starts to grow. Tomorrow: why making my company dormant was an important first step in starting again. #coaching #companyofone #fourthousandweeks #slowproductivity #workinpublic #valuesbasedliving #coactivecoaching
