Participatory practice, which is to heed the guidance and meet the needs of our communities, is essential to collective liberation. As an intermediary funder deeply rooted in the communities we serve, we know that the swift distribution of resources during crises is necessary for the health, wellness, success, and sheer survival of grassroots movements and leaders. When paired with unrestricted, long-term funding, rapid response resources buoy organizers to fend off extreme antagonism and pivot to seize key opportunities. They’re particularly critical for BIPOC, queer, trans, and disabled folks, as they're disproportionately impacted by all crises (from legislative to climate), and the orgs serving them are overwhelmingly under-resourced. This cataclysmic election result is philanthropy’s to meet. We have an opportunity and moral obligation to lean deeply into participatory practice across all areas of operation and give all that our community partners require. “Justice looks like a space to rest.” – The Nap Ministry by Tricia Hersey As the Nap Ministry reminds us, “Rest is a form of resistance because it disrupts and pushes back against capitalism and white supremacy.” Beginning Friday, December 13th, through Friday, January 3rd, Groundswell Fund offices will be closed to allow our staff time for rest and rejuvenation. We will return to the office on Monday, January 6th. We’ll see you in the new year – ready and rested.

Grassroots leaders are at the heart of lasting change. In 2023, Groundswell Fund’s Capacity Building programs supported transformational organizing across Black, Indigenous, immigrant, LGBTQ+, and low-income communities. Through bold investments, we provided: $6.4M in total support $3.5M in direct grants 62,000 voters mobilized nationwide 🛠️ Programs like Integrated Voter Engagement and the Grassroots Organizing Institute deliver the tools and resources needed to tackle systemic barriers and drive meaningful change year-round. From reclaiming abortion access in Wisconsin to defending birth justice in Texas, grantees like Freedom Inc. and The Afiya Center are leading transformative change in their communities.
