Project Purpose is quickly becoming a signature program for keeping Northwest Georgia talent local, thanks to the support of the Georgia Manufacturing Extension Partnership (GaMEP) at Georgia Tech and the Georgia Tech Center for Economic Development Research!!
Manufacturing is the heart of the Northwest Georgia economy, home to 23% of the region's jobs. So when Georgia AIM partners launched Project Purpose two years ago with the goal of helping local manufacturers connect with local high school graduates looking to work, the initiative was an immediate success. Today, this Project Purpose continues to grow thanks to the work of the Center for Economic Development Research (CEDR) and the Georgia Manufacturing Extension Partnership (GaMEP), both Georgia AIM partners. These programs have been working on Northwest Georgia’s high-demand career initiative, iWORKS, since 2014. iWORKS is comprised of industry, workforce development and economic development experts, K-12 and post-secondary, community nonprofits, and economic development representatives. It was formed to help the region create and implement a strategy to draw those jobs — and fill them. This is a community-based model that works for Northwest Georgia; in other parts of the state, Georgia AIM uses similar community-first approaches to develop pilot projects connecting manufacturers and residents with smart technologies and workforce solutions. “This is very beneficial to the organization and industry — more importantly for the students to provide a leg up in their career for their future,” said Courtney Laird (pictured), a recruiter with flooring company Shaw Industries.
