Independent abortion clinics in the US provide essential health care even in the face of continuous bans and threats to abortion access. Despite operating in a hostile legal and financial landscape, at least 32 independent clinics have opened in 10 states since the Dobbs decision. Some of these are clinics that moved or opened a new location. Others opened after recognizing the need caused by bans—including for abortion care later in pregnancy. Everyone deserves abortion access in their communities and indie clinics are vital to ensuring this for as many people as possible. In June, the US Supreme Court refused to weigh in on the critical EMTALA case that could preserve federal protections for emergency abortion care in the state of Idaho. The case returned to a federal appeals court this week, where litigation continued on whether Idaho can ban abortion in medical emergencies.
