Congratulations Hacker for their Honor Award at the Oregon Architecture Awards for Ellen Browning. Ellen Browning came to be when a close-knit group of family and friends developed a building of ten urban homes as a community model for aging in place in urban Portland. The building design blends variously sized homes with gardens and porches off the mixed-use streetscape. Terraced patios with leaf-etched privacy screens scale the four-story building down while creating visual and social connections between floors. A patio meets the street level for public use, alongside a free art gallery as a gift from the clients to the neighborhood. Aging is prioritized, with accessible shared social spaces, exercise, and spa amenities designed to support these friends and family as they grow older together. It’s hardly unexpected that Salem—Oregon’s state capital—would embrace wood for a municipal facility. But here, Hacker used wood to elevate what could have been a mundane and utilitarian structure into a rich and varied new center that is both simple and sophisticated—without sacrificing function." We're excited to share that the Ellen Browning Building received an Honor Award at last night's 2024 AIA Oregon Architecture Awards – thank you to this year's awards jury and congratulations to the project team! The genesis for the mixed-use residential Ellen Browning Building arose when a group of close friends considered how they could preserve their relationships and connect to a diverse neighborhood during their last years. Co-housing, with its emphasis on community and shared spaces, provided the perfect answer. They opted for the strategy of aging in place together within a walkable, amenity-rich, and healthcare-accessible neighborhood. Hacker reimagined the street-facing side of the building as a modern interpretation of the traditional front porch. The design team introduced a sequence of outdoor terraces designed to capture natural light, which gradually recede from the street. This innovative approach not only fosters neighborly connections but also maximizes light, ventilation, and scenic views compared to a conventional street-facing structure. This Friday, October 18th, Hacker is leading two local project tours as part of the A4LE-Association for Learning Environments LearningSPACES 2024 Conference – one tour of the Oregon Episcopal School Athletic Center and another tour of the Portland State University Fariborz Maseeh Hall. More details here: https://lnkd.in/dPCpKTP PSU Maseeh Hall // With the aim of modernizing and revitalizing the 1960s fortress-like Neuberger Hall (now Fariborz Maseeh Hall) into a vibrant academic hub serving nearly all of Portland State University’s students, the design team was given a clear directive; transform the building with a contemporary, interactive, and light-filled atmosphere, enhancing connectivity, wayfinding, and accessibility. Additionally, it aimed to ensure compliance with life safety standards while fostering a stronger connection between the university and the city. The tour will be led by Hacker's Nick Hodges and Rashmi Vasavada. OES Athletic Center // The Athletic Center has undergone a significant redesign, tailored to meet the evolving needs of students, athletes, and academic departments. Informed by input from both students and faculty, the updated facility boasts flexible team rooms and gender-inclusive facilities, promoting equity and a sense of belonging. Traditional locker rooms have been replaced with versatile team rooms, accommodating diverse preferences and fostering inclusivity for mixed-gender teams. Emphasizing the revitalization of underutilized spaces, the design encourages collaboration among coaches and their mixed-gender teams. The Home Forward Killingsworth affordable housing complex in NE Portland is coming together beautifully, and we recently had the opportunity to tour the site with our dedicated project team. A huge shout-out to our O'Neill/Walsh Community Builders (OWCB) and RDF BUILDERS CO team — Kent Usher, Ali O'Neill, Maurice Rahming, Patrick Dengsot, Jenny Evans, Uriah Lattimer and Sara Schubert — for their hard work, collaboration, and commitment to this project’s success. And to our RDF craftspeople, Andre Snegeriff, Heath Fletcher, Sara Atkinsen, Dan McHargue, Lanel Gentry, Mario Loera, Mike Britt and Uriah Lattimer we thank you for your attention to detail, exceptional skill and incredible work ethic. Located at Portland Community College's new Opportunity Center, this development will feature 84 homes and 3 early learning classrooms. Families residing here will benefit from a range of services, including career resources, social support, workforce training, and educational programs. NAYA Family Center will offer onsite early childhood education, while the Oregon Department of Human Services will be present to assist families on campus. Next year, the Multnomah County Health Department will open a community health center, further enhancing support for residents. The Home Forward Killingsworth project is a testament to innovative housing solutions promoting career and educational advancement for families.
