Lara is a trial lawyer who concentrates her practice in the areas of general liability, third-party insurance defense, and premises liability. Before joining Hamilton, Miller & Birthisel, Lara was a partner at a Florida defense firm where she represented insurance companies in defense of their first-party property, general liability, automobile negligence, gig economy, and premises liability claims. Before that, Lara dedicated her practice to advocating on behalf of some of Florida’s most vulnerable citizens. Lara received her Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from the University of Tennessee and her Juris Doctor from Florida A&M University College of Law. Prior to her admission to the Bar, Lara was chosen as one of two legal interns to U.S. Senator Marco Rubio. Duane is a trial lawyer who focuses his practice in the areas of premises liability, personal injury, and complex commercial litigation, in both Florida and federal courts. Duane’s work ethic and tenacity have made him well suited to his areas of specialty. Before joining Hamilton, Miller & Birthisel, Duane served as an Assistant State Attorney with the 9th Circuit State Attorney’s Office in Orlando, Florida and the 13th Circuit State Attorney’s Office in Tampa, Florida. With hands-on trial experience, Duane has tried over 10 cases to verdict, securing guilty verdicts for various misdemeanor and felony level offenses. Additionally, Duane has represented insurance companies and other commercial clients in a variety of litigation matters. Duane earned his Bachelor of Science Degree from Buffalo State College, majoring in Criminal Justice and his Juris Doctor from Florida A&M University, College of Law. At the 13th Annual Bloom Awards Gala, #HMBLaw’s Gina Jacobs, Esq. won a “Defense Attorney Excellence Award,” as one of five winners from 50 nominees in this category, recognized for their trial advocacy, dedication, and commitment to fair outcomes. Ms. Jacobs also had the distinguished honor of being the master of ceremonies for the awards presentation and knocked it out of the park. #HMBLaw’s Liva Rivera was also given Bloom’s “Most Influential Award”, as one of three winners being honored for making a positive impact in the industry. Another win for HMB! In this case, the Plaintiff asserted that he tripped and fell over an empty pallet while shopping in the lawn & garden department of a large home and garden home improvement retailer, resulting in injury to his back and hip. He sued for damages related to the injury. During deposition, Plaintiff admitted that the pallet was clearly visible following the incident and that he walked between two pallets to get the product he wanted. HM&B filed a Motion for Summary Judgment arguing the condition was open and obvious. The Court heard oral argument from the parties and concluded that the alleged hazard was indeed an open and obvious condition inherent to the garden center. #HMBLaw was victorious. #HMBLaw’s Jerry Hamilton will be a featured presenter at the KANSAS ASSOCIATION OF DEFENSE COUNSEL’s (KADC) 2024 Annual Meeting. Jerry will speak on the topic of preventing and/or mitigating runaway verdicts, a timely and important issue in the legal industry. He will also lead a much- anticipated breakout session for young lawyers, focusing on essential trail skills. The KADC is a statewide non-profit organization of Kansas lawyers who devote a substantial part of their practice to the civil defense of litigated cases.
