The phrase “PACE” can summarize our common goal each day: “Preventing Accidents and Consequential Errors.” MYR Group designed the PACE Tools to predict, manage, and prevent error-likely situations that can result from human error traps of distraction, stress, fatigue, poor communication, and overconfidence. The eight PACE Tools are: • Self-Check to prevent rushing and to help you focus • Questioning Attitude to keep tabs on your work as you go. • Procedures to ensure no detail is overlooked. • Final Check to help prevent any errors having an impact. • Peer Check to have an extra set of eyes on our tasks. • Critical Step Check identifies and records critical steps in a task before beginning work. • Effective Communication confirms that messages and information are heard or conveyed correctly. • Post-Job Review to assess the team’s performance. Use PACE Tools throughout the day to mitigate the impact of human error traps and keep yourself safe. Some people may find it uncomfortable to speak up, but remember that the consequences of not speaking up can be much worse than a few awkward moments. Before Brian Birton joined the PLANT pre-apprenticeship, he was job hopping. Now he says he's "found a home" in electrical construction.
