"This is a stupid idea and no one will ever use it". When I was first building my startup, harpoon, I wasn't even sure if it would work at all. I spent every night and weekend working tirelessly to try to see if I could get it to work. Every moment spent working on the initial capability to build something no one else had ever built was 𝗲𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗰. After a few months of development, I had a working prototype and I was over the moon. 🌕 I was so excited that I wanted to share my news with everyone and immediately get validation. I hit up a bunch of VC's and people I knew to show them something I thought was the new sliced bread. I ended up getting an opportunity with a VC to pitch the idea about a month later, with the caveat that they wanted to invite some additional people to the meeting to get their perspective. I was so excited I didn't even ask who else was coming. It was a bunch of other local technical leaders, including another founder who had a competing product (much less novel, but further along). He dominated the conversation and pointed out all the potential flaws with what I was building in front of the VC's and the rest of the group, going so far as to say "this is a stupid idea and no one will ever use it". I didn't agree with what he had said, but I was 𝙘𝙧𝙪𝙨𝙝𝙚𝙙, and I didn't have the credibility with these VC's to argue against a trusted advisor. Later as I was walking out to the parking lot he came up to me at my car and told me I should come work for him and integrate all of my source code into his product. In the most diplomatic way I could muster I told him to pound sand. His company is now dead 💀and harpoon 🐳 has over 24,000 users. If you're starting a company or in the "grind" period right now, believe in yourself and don't let critics dissuade you from building something you know is going to be great. They can't see what you can sometimes. Every successful product seems obvious in hindsight but seldom strikes people as the next big thing before it has traction.
