When I started The Pocket Panty in 2021, in no way, form, or fashion could I have ever imagined I would land right back here, holding it down for young women. I actually spent a lot of time thinking about which humanitarian issue TPP wanted to tackle first. After reading an article that talked about the spike in early menstruation at the age of nine, I knew then that would be our first cause. The article resonated with me because I, too, was a young girl who started her cycle early and unexpectedly. Did you know: 39% of female students skip school because of menstruation, citing lack of access to feminine products and embarrassment from leakage. 55% of children who do not have access to underwear skip school because they’re embarrassed. 1 in 5 young women experience a heavier-than-most menstrual cycle. I was fortunate to have my mom at home to bring me a spare pair, but that wasn't the case for some of my peers. Giving a young woman a sanitary product while at school is excellent, but what if she’s already bled through her undies?!?! I’m so happy that I’m still continuing this journey by advocating for young girls who either don’t have access to fresh and clean underwear or are limited in access. We can get young girls in school and keep them there with a pretty simple solution. No girl or woman should have to live without this basic human need.
