Biotechnology Scaling Made Easy
About us
Scaling industrial biotechnology innovation from research to profitable operations is a formidable challenge. It requires world class R&D, process development and engineering expertise, partnership structuring know how, and more besides. Access to capital for this industry is notoriously limited until an ability to scale has been demonstrated. Consequently, hiring a world-class execution team is beyond the reach of many early-stage companies and their management teams. Hawkwood Biotech Partners brings together an extensive network of preeminent industrial biotechnology specialists. Our partners have been involved in some of the most ambitious stories in the history of this field, and our experience covers all aspects of commercial and technical scale-up: experience we now wish to share, to help companies and their technologies reach their full potential.

Hawkwood partners, Tony Day and Adrienne McKee, were invited by Aimpoint Research® to participate in their annual Disruption Workshop held in Sunnyvale. They joined other industry leaders to lead a deep dive session on precision fermentation, discussing the state of the art technologies, perspectives, and the industry's future. #synbio #precision #fermentation #industrial #biotech
Looking over the horizon is the hallmark of Aimpoint’s annual Disruption Workshop. In collaboration with Plug and Play Tech Center and Hawkwood Biotech Partners, we hosted industry leaders and members of our Executive Intelligence Network in Sunnyvale, California for a deep dive into precision fermentation. Precision fermentation is the engine that will power the future bioeconomy for agriculture, energy and food. We toured startup leaders like Checkerspot, who are creating biobased polymers for outdoor products and cooking oils via algae fermentation, and Pivot Bio, a leader in biological crop nutrition. Key things we learned: 🇺🇸 There is a significant gap in U.S. fermentation capacity, specifically mid-sized facilities. The DOD is investing $1B+ in fermentation capacity over the next 5 years to build U.S. competitiveness and protect national security. Access to low-cost capital will continue to be critical to building capacity. 🌱 The 20th century was defined by chemistry, and the 21st century will be defined by biology. Biologicals are growing 4X the rate of ag globally, even while trying to overcome past performance issues with farmers. The industry will need to continue to collectively navigate producer perceptions to ensure long-term success. ⏱ The timeline to identify a microbe to bring to market has rapidly advanced from 10 years to 2 years, and that is without even considering the potential AI will unlock. 👤 Aligned with growing consumer demand, precision fermentation will drive an increase in high-value, functional food products. A BIG thank you to our attendees and panelists for making this year’s Workshop one of the best yet. Yesterday, during Day 3 of the SynBioBeta conference, Hawkwood Biotech Partners' Founder and Managing Partner, Richard Kenny participated in a panel discussion titled "Biomanufacturing Breakdown: Lessons Learned from Scale-up Failures and Successes." The panel focused on the practicalities of winning in synbio, with panelists sharing their experiences in scaling up businesses. Alongside Richard were industry peers John Nicols (former CEO, Codexis, Inc.), Allison ("Ali") M. Wing (CEO of Oobli), and Shannon Hall (Founder and CEO of Pow.Bio). Rich shared the challenges and lessons learnt during commercializing bio-based products at Solazyme, along with practical advice for synbio companies aiming for success. Also, Richard moderated a panel discussion titled "Funding What You Wear: Pioneering Pathways to Get Sustainable Goods to Market". The panelists, which included: Harshal Chokhawala (CEO and Founder, ZymoChem), Taehong Huh (Managing Partner, GS Futures), Kristen McCarthy Barton, CFA (CEO, Mango Materials ) and Kelsey Weimer (Strategy and Partnerships, Synonym) discussed how emerging biobased products can obtain fuel to scale amid the current investment landscape. At Hawkwood Biotech Partners, we help disruptors in the industrial biotech space dramatically accelerate the path to market. To learn more, visit Hawkwoodbiotech.com
