Jackie Kuehnle is comfortable in an operating room. As a surgical technologist at HCA Florida West Marion Hospital for 14 years and knows the excellence provided by the team. She spends just as much time in the OR with Dr. Joseph Locker, an orthopedic surgeon, as she does on the back of a horse. She never thought she'd need the care we provide at the hospital until it happened to her. She slipped on the floor of her kitchen and immediately knew she'd broken her hip. The American Cancer Society estimated that 13,820 new cases of invasive cervical cancer were diagnosed in 2024, and that there were 4,360 cervical cancer deaths last year. Yet cervical cancer is highly treatable when detected early. Early detection is also associated with both long-term survival and good quality of life. January is Cervical Cancer Awareness Month, and HCA Florida Ocala Hospital and HCA Florida West Marion Hospital encourage women to get screened for cervical cancer earlier. Work with a gynecologist or gynecological oncologist to learn how the risk of cervical cancer can be reduced, such as with the HPV vaccine and regular screenings. HCA Florida Ocala Hospital's Cardiology team recently celebrated a major milestone in cardiac care for hundreds of our patients: performing the 500th trans-catheter aortic valve replacement, a procedure also known as TAVR. TAVR is a minimally invasive procedure that focuses on replacing a thickened aortic valve whose difficulty in fully opening reduces blood flow from the heart to the rest of the body. A TAVR delivers a replacement heart valve without requiring stopping the heart or opening the chest cavity. Colleagues from the HCA Florida Ocala Trauma Center helped spread holiday cheer and increased safety awareness to attendees at the Holiday Wonder Lane event, hosted by our community partners at Marion Senior Services. Our colleagues shared plenty of important information about preventing falls and creating a safer home environment at the event, held Thursday in Ocala. They also distributed more than 100 bags of holiday-related goodies. Falls cause roughly 56 percent of all visits to the HCA Florida Ocala Trauma Center. Our trauma team members were happy to share their expertise with local seniors to help keep them safe for the upcoming holidays and beyond.
