Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The CDC also reports that most people with lung cancer don’t have symptoms until later stages of the disease. The good news is that regular screenings can find lung cancer early, when it’s most treatable. Follow these screening guidelines from HCA Healthcare’s Sarah Cannon Cancer Network, and talk to your doctor to learn more. Patients must meet all criteria shown here to be eligible for screening. #ImproveMoreLives #LungCancerScreening #LungCancerAwareness

“She has really just beat all of the odds,” explained Kacey Rupe, HCA Healthcare patient and mother to her daughter, Riley. When Kacey was 26 weeks pregnant, she developed severe preeclampsia, a potentially life-threatening condition that put both her and her unborn baby at risk. Preeclampsia can happen after the 20th week of pregnancy or after giving birth (called postpartum preeclampsia). Most people who have preeclampsia have dangerously high blood pressure and may have problems with their kidneys. Kacey was taken to HCA HealthONE Presbyterian St. Luke's for high-risk maternity care. The Denver, Colorado hospital is the only facility in the Rocky Mountain region with a Level IV maternal unit and a Level IV neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) under one roof. For more than a month, Kacey received expert maternity care and at 31 weeks, Riley was born weighing just 2 pounds, 6 ounces. Baby Riley spent six weeks in HCA HealthONE Rocky Mountain Children’s NICU before going home with her parents. Today, Kacey and Riley are both doing well thanks to specialized care provided by our HCA HealthONE colleagues and clinicians. HCA Healthcare is proud to support March of Dimes’ "Low Dose, Big Benefits" campaign, aimed at decreasing the adverse effects of preeclampsia and preterm birth through the use of low-dose aspirin. As HCA Healthcare’s National Medical Director of Robotics and Vice President of St. David's HealthCare’s Texas Institute for Robotic Surgery, Dr. Thomas Payne uses his experience as an international leader in robotic-assisted surgery to drive innovation in healthcare. Since 2004, following FDA approval of a first-of-its-kind robotic platform, Dr. Payne utilized advancements in technology to perform thousands of robotic-assisted surgical procedures – providing patients with lower complication rates, improved outcomes and faster recovery times. While Dr. Payne found great joy in providing direct patient care, he discovered a passion for expanding his impact on healthcare by sharing his expertise with fellow surgeons across HCA Healthcare to help them shape the future of robotic-assisted surgery. “As one of the leading healthcare providers in the U.S., we take pride in our ability to scale best practices in all areas of healthcare across our system,” said Dr. Payne. “We intentionally and systematically support the development of our surgeons into robotic leaders.” On “HCA Healthcare Today,” learn from Dr. Payne as he shares his perspective on how the healthcare industry will continue to evolve with robotic-assisted surgery, and why continued developments can help transform the care delivery experience for surgeons and their teams: https://bit.ly/3V2M4HO. #ImproveMoreLives #HealthierTomorrows

Today, we are proud to announce HCA Healthcare collected 21,137 pounds of unused or expired medications during our sixth annual “Crush the Crisis” national prescription drug take back day. This surpasses last year’s totals and is the most we have ever collected during the annual event. In total, HCA Healthcare has now collected more than 88,600 pounds of medication since launching “Crush the Crisis” as an enterprise initiative in 2019. “I am amazed by the results of this year’s Crush the Crisis,” said Dr. Randy Fagin, chief medical officer of HCA Healthcare’s National Group. “Our colleagues showed up for their communities to help remove unneeded medication before it could fall into the wrong hands. This record-breaking year is a testament to how HCA Healthcare cares for the communities we serve.” HCA Healthcare facilities across the country partnered with local law enforcement to help communities safely and anonymously dispose of unused or expired medication. An estimated 14.5 million doses of medication were collected at more than 125 collection sites. HCA Healthcare’s “Crush the Crisis” events were held in alignment with the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) National Prescription Drug Take Back Day, which collected 629,953 pounds of medication. ➡ Learn more about HCA Healthcare’s initiatives to help reduce prescription drug misuse and transform pain management: https://bit.ly/3AQyTmu. #HealthierTomorrows #CrushTheCrisis

Within HCA Healthcare’s more than 90 NICUs, we are committed to providing specialized care to newborns born prematurely or sick. During Prematurity Awareness Month, we are proud to recognize the resilience of our tiniest patients and the dedication of colleagues like HCA Healthcare’s Jeanne Marcial and Kaylee Olsen. “For 27 years, I’ve had the privilege of working in the NICU, caring for countless infants,” shared Jeanne, NICU Director at HCA Healthcare’s St. Mark's Hospital. “Never did I imagine that one day, I would be hiring one of those infants as a nurse in our unit.” However, that happened when she invited a new nurse, Kaylee, to join their team. Kaylee was born prematurely at St. Mark’s Hospital decades ago at just 27 weeks, weighing only 2 pounds, 2 ounces. Six of Kaylee’s new colleagues at the Salt Lake City, Utah hospital were a part of the team who determinedly cared for her all those years ago – feeding her, changing her and helping her tiny body grow and thrive. “It’s a unique experience seeing our tiniest babies – our most vulnerable patients – and realizing I was once just as small,” Kaylee shared. “I just can’t describe how amazing it is to watch them grow and see them go home with their families – healthy and strong – it's incredibly fulfilling.” Read more as HCA Healthcare colleagues share what’s behind their desire to deliver care in HCA Healthcare’s NICUs: https://bit.ly/3CvSetx. #HCANursing #PrematurityAwarenessMonth

Across HCA Healthcare, injury prevention colleagues are dedicated to creating safer communities by providing awareness and advocacy through injury prevention programs, community education and outreach. On National Injury Prevention Day, we’re uplifting the positive impact of Kristen Hullum, trauma injury prevention coordinator at HCA Healthcare affiliate St. David’s Round Rock Medical Center. Kristen joined the St. David's HealthCare family over 22 years ago as a bedside nurse and served as a nursing supervisor in critical care prior to becoming an injury prevention coordinator. As a part of the Round Rock, Texas hospital’s Level II Trauma Center, she is dedicated to educating community members about safety. She partners with local school districts, law enforcement and community organizations to offer educational classes, from STOP THE BLEED® and CPR trainings to fall and infant injury prevention. Additionally, Kristen is a child passenger safety technician and works with local EMS partners to provide car seat inspections and education. Kristen serves as the representative for HCA Healthcare’s Central and West Texas Division on our national Injury Prevention and Education Council. In her role, she enjoys collaborating with other injury prevention coordinators to establish safety initiatives, mentorship, trainings and more. “I really like to think that my work in prevention is saving some of these people from those catastrophic injuries,” Kristen shared. “I always let them know that if something happens, our trauma team and hospital stands ready to give them the best possible care, but I hope to spare them that trip through the doors of the emergency department and the potential life-changing consequences of that injury.” At HCA Healthcare, our dedicated injury prevention coordinators work to identify risks, implement evidence-based prevention strategies, and serve as a resource to the communities we serve. Today and every day, we thank colleagues like Kristen for making a lasting difference. #HealthierTomorrows #BeInjuryFree

During Hurricanes #Helene and #Milton, we saw HCA Healthcare colleagues embody the true spirit of dedication and resilience. Today, we’re honored to shine a light on Victoria Drury, a licensed practical nurse (LPN) in HCA Healthcare’s Memorial Satilla Health emergency department. Never once calling in during her nine years at the Waycross, Georgia hospital, Victoria maintains a perfect attendance record that is both inspiring and a testament to her character. Despite the severe storm damage in her community following Hurricane Helene, Victoria was determined to make it to Memorial Satilla Health to care for patients and support her team. Unfortunately, both exits from her neighborhood were blocked by debris, so Victoria called the hospital and was told Emergency Department Director Ashton Poole would come pick her up at first light if she could make it out to the main road. For Victoria, dependability is more than a personal value – it’s a legacy she aims to impart to others. “I always try to teach my children to be somebody to rely on,” Victoria shared. “Your character is your word, and I try to be that example.” When Victoria arrived at the hospital, she diligently worked alongside her fellow ER colleagues to ensure anyone who needed care could receive it. “What stood out was all the admin and staff just coming together to work,” Victoria said. Thank you to our incredible colleagues, like Victoria, for showing up for our patients, colleagues and communities each day. #CareLikeFamily #HCANursing

The HCA Healthcare Hope Fund, a 501(c)(3) charity that helps HCA Healthcare employees and their immediate families who are affected by financial hardship, today announced that The Frist Foundation has donated $1 million to support HCA Healthcare colleagues impacted by Hurricanes Helene and Milton. Hurricane Helene made landfall as a powerful category 4 hurricane on Thursday, September 26, leaving more than four million people without power and causing major damage as it traveled throughout the Southeast. Since then, more than 3,400 colleagues have turned to the Hope Fund for assistance, with more than $2.7 million in grants already distributed to those impacted. “We are grateful for The Frist Foundation’s compassionate support of our colleagues in the wake of the recent hurricanes,” said Jen Berres, senior vice president and chief human resources officer at HCA Healthcare and chair of the HCA Healthcare Hope Fund. “The HCA Healthcare Hope Fund is proud to support HCA Healthcare colleagues when devastation strikes, and we are committed to helping our communities rebuild and recover.” To learn more about The Frist Foundation and how the Hope Fund supports colleagues impacted by unexpected crises, disasters and other challenging situations, visit https://bit.ly/40Pf75o. #OurHopeFund #HCACares

This week, we are honored to uplift the inspiring stories of HCA Healthcare’s veteran colleagues and the positive impact they’re making in the communities we serve. Meet Dr. Carl Devemark, trauma surgeon and emergency general surgeon at HCA Healthcare affiliate Del Sol Medical Center. Before saving lives in the El Paso, Texas hospital operating room, Dr. Devemark served as a F-16 fighter pilot. Graduating from the United States Air Force Academy in 1999 with a degree in aeronautical engineering, Dr. Devemark initially became a fighter pilot. He served in the United States Air Force for 11 years, completing 150 combat hours and retiring with invaluable experiences that would later shape his journey into healthcare. When it came time to transition out of the military, Dr. Devemark sought a career where he could continue making a difference. For a surgeon, the transition from fighter jets to the operating room came naturally. “Trauma surgery is a lot like flying a fighter jet,” Dr. Devemark shared. “You have to be calm, collected and cool under pressure and be able to think about the overall picture of being a fighter pilot or saving a patient’s life.” We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the thousands of veterans, active-duty personnel and military spouses a part of the HCA Healthcare family.
