Throughout the past year, we saw countless examples of HCA Healthcare colleagues showing up for our patients, our communities and each other. Our next top 10 story of 2024 highlights HCA Healthcare colleagues throwing a surprise hospital graduation ceremony for a fellow nurse. Danielle “Elle” Fox serves as a labor and delivery (L&D) clinical nurse coordinator at HCA Healthcare’s Mission Health in Asheville, North Carolina. She has provided care for mothers and babies at the hospital since 2018. In pursuit of enhancing her leadership capabilities, Elle embarked in a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree program. When it came time for her Master’s graduation in April, Elle decided that she wasn’t going to travel to the ceremony several states away – even though she was named valedictorian. But that didn’t stop her Mission Hospital colleagues from throwing her a surprise hospital graduation ceremony to celebrate her achievements. In a viral video, fellow nurses and other members of Elle’s hospital family lined the hallway of her unit and encouraged her to walk as they cheered and clapped. Elle shared that she did not have any regrets about not attending her formal graduation ceremony. “There is nothing I would have changed other than having my husband, kids and family witness the sweetest graduation on my unit in person. I would much rather be celebrated by close friends than thousands of people I don’t know,” said Elle. “We helped bring a lot of babies into the world that day, and I was right where I was supposed to be.” We are proud of the thousands of HCA Healthcare nurses each year who pursue education opportunities to enhance patient care and expand their skills. Today, we’re continuing to look back on HCA Healthcare’s Top 10 stories from the past year. In the fall of 2024, Hurricanes Helene and Milton made history for the magnitude of their aftermath. The unwavering commitment and care of colleagues across HCA Healthcare remain unforgettable. Hurricane Helene, which impacted Florida, Georgia, the Carolinas, Tennessee and Virginia as a Category 4 storm, is the second deadliest hurricane – behind Katrina in 2005 – to make landfall this century in the continental United States. Two weeks later, Hurricane Milton struck Florida as a Category 3 storm that spawned roughly four dozen tornadoes throughout the state and caused massive flooding in central and west Florida. Throughout these two large scale disasters, HCA Healthcare stood ready with the resources needed to provide uninterrupted patient care and to support our colleagues and communities. Our national network of resources, including colleagues, supplies, vendor relationships and more, allowed us to respond immediately in a way that only HCA Healthcare can. Our scale sets us apart, and the skills and dedication of our people makes our crisis response possible. We’re continuing to highlight HCA Healthcare’s top 10 stories of 2024! Up next: The lifesaving hospital care provided to a tiny and mighty congenital heart defect patient, Beckett. We first introduced Beckett to our followers in 2023 and his healthcare journey has since garnered numerous likes, shares and comments on our social media channels throughout 2024. Beckett received treatment for hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) at HCA Healthcare affiliate Medical City Children’s Hospital in Dallas. HLHS is considered a critical congenital heart defect that affects normal blood flow through the heart. In 2024, Beckett’s story was also featured as part of the Coalition to Strengthen America's Healthcare’s new campaign, underscoring the importance of 24/7, essential and specialized care that only hospitals provide. After his birth, a highly-skilled team of Medical City Healthcare professionals – including surgeons, physicians, nurses and more – performed three open heart surgeries on Beckett when his heart was still the size of a walnut. “Every single family that comes into our heart center is a part of our family from day one. We have a huge team that cares for these babies. In Beckett’s case, 40 to 50 people at least were involved in caring for this one little baby,” shared the baby’s physician, Dr. Kristine Guleserian, Congenital Heart Surgery Program Director at Medical City Children’s Hospital. Today, Beckett is hitting all the milestones for a healthy one-year-old. Beckett’s mom Kayla gives all the credit to her son’s care team, saying, “Our son would not be here without a hospital.” To learn more about Beckett’s remarkable journey and other memorable 2024 stories, visit https://bit.ly/49YRYQu. #CareLikeFamily #HealthierTomorrows

"This is the biggest gift I could ever receive. Nurse Alison truly is my angel." Today, HCA Healthcare patient Luis Sanchez-Mendia shares his gratitude and celebrates his 68th birthday after receiving a second chance at life thanks to a special HCA Florida Healthcare nurse. During our #DaysofCaring series, we’re uplifting the care and quick-thinking of registered nurse Alison Seecoomar. During her routine stops at the gas station, Alison and Luis, a gas attendant, often exchange brief greetings. But, a recent visit was unlike any other. Knowing that Alison was a nurse, Luis asked her to check his heart. Alison noticed he was experiencing shortness of breath, chest pains and using her stethoscope, she identified a serious heart murmur. Alison recommended Luis go to the hospital for immediate care. Luis went to HCA Florida Westside Hospital, the same hospital where Alison serves as an emergency room nurse. HCA Florida Westside Hospital is equipped with advanced emergency and cardiac care. Upon arrival, Luis was diagnosed with a critical heart condition. He had a coronary artery bypass surgery, which restores blood flow to areas of the heart, with an aortic valve replacement. This complex procedure saved his life. The husband and father of two has recovered and is thankful to spend the holiday season with his loved ones. According to the USDA, the number of food insecure households continued to rise in 2023 — up to 13.5%. 🥫🍎 During #DaysofCaring, we’re uplifting the remarkable efforts of HCA Healthcare colleagues during our fourth annual Healthy Food for Healthier Tomorrows Food & Nutrition Drive to support access to nutritious food. Ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, HCA Healthcare, our colleagues and the HCA Healthcare Foundation helped provide thousands of nutritious meals to community organizations by donating food or making financial contributions to help purchase perishable items such as milk, fruit and vegetables. Hospitals were encouraged to use their creativity to can-struct sculptures with the donated food before taking it to their local food banks. The top ranked sculpture in each HCA Healthcare division received a $10,000 grant for a food bank serving their community. Congratulations to our winning hospitals!
