Our words are so very powerful.. This is why I wrote the paper about doing the right thing. It's about changing our labels and language when it comes to the unhoused. The label "homeless or homelessness," is no longer appropriate. It's an old language.. and in order to solve the many issues, we need to start here. It's a complex issue.. Jonathan Macdonald and I will be doing some panels about this topic soon. Where you will hear from people experiencing it and why this language is not supportive. I wrote this paper about changing our language and the labels we use with people. I recently watched a youtube video where this girl kept calling a black man, "You all." She was a Trump supporter, since he said it, she took upon herself to repeat it.. the guy told her is was offensive and she kept calling him that.. (more to the story, if you want to watch it) https://lnkd.in/gJF_T2BA It's the same thing calling people "homeless or homelessness." It's a bad label, one gal I know says the government says it so why can't I? Just because the gov't still using this bad label doesn't mean, you need to keep saying it. It's degrading and it's criminalizing. The reason people don't have homes is a structural issue.. why blame this on people who are struggling? Do you feel better about name calling? As a member of Fremont for Everyone - it's a policy group in Fremont, CA we are hosting a Mayoral Forum, along with the Fremont Library - as there are several new people running for Mayor.
