HER HEALTHX
Public Health
We are on a mission to change the way women experience health care, improve health outcomes and reduce morbidity rates.
About us
HER HEALTHX is a nonprofit focused on quantifying the cost of medical gaslighting so that we are able to improve health outcomes for women. Our Vision: Reduce mortality and morbidity rates for women in the next 10 years. The State of Women’s Health Many women have stories as caregivers or patients of having their symptoms dismissed, experienced interruptions while receiving care, heard condescending remarks or had subtle persuasion they were depressed. We are collaborating with data researchers and health experts to identify and quantify the cost of medical gaslighting. Our research focus is to quantify the impact on employees, employers, caregivers, payers, providers, health systems, life science organizations and communities are impacted when symptoms are dismissed. We are establishing an ecosystem that is passionate about creating real and lasting change in the next decade. We are looking for partners, sponsors and individual donors to join us and be force multipliers to improve health outcomes for women.

Thank you Elizabeth Garner for sharing your experience at the White House Conference on Women’s Health Research. Favorite quote - “without our health we cannot work, we cannot parent and we cannot be caregivers.” HER HEALTHX is working on improving the way women experience health care and reducing morbidity and mortality rates for women. Last week, the President and the First Lady hosted the “White House Conference on Women’s Health Research,” organized by The White House (WH) Initiative on Women’s Health Research and the Milken Institute Health. What a brilliant way to end 2024 and to look forward toward the continued elevation of women’s health! I listened to the recording over the weekend because I realized that there were so many words of wisdom and deep insights shared by the speakers, and I wanted to capture them all! Over the next few days, I'll be posting some of the key takeaways I gathered from the meeting. The morning began with comments from Jennifer Klein (WH Gender Policy Council), Carolyn M. Mazure (WH Initiative on Women’s Health Research), Maria Shriver (Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement), and Esther Krofah (Milken Institute Health). 🔸 Jennifer Klein noted the nearly $1 billion already committed for women's health research. Agencies have strengthened their research and data standards to ensure that women are considered at every point in the research process. 🔸 Dr. Mazure emphasized that women's health is now a recognized field of scientific study, and that the stage has been set to grow its scope and depth. 🔸 Esther Krofah highlighted Milken's work designing funding and partnership solutions to bridge gaps and spur innovation. I found Maria Shriver's remarks particularly powerful and moving: some quotes: 💠 "...this issue is one of health equity and justice for women.” 💠 “Without our health, we cannot work, we cannot parent, and we cannot be caregivers.” 💠 “Everybody in this room is one diagnosis away from a life changing moment that could jeopardize the very communities and the families who depend on each and every one of us.” 💠 "My mother said-'Do not be afraid to go to whoever holds the power, if you really want to get something big done' and that's why I went to Jill Biden!" 💠 “There is no doubt in my mind that we will make good on this pledge to continue to transform women’s health; no doubt in my mind that we will be table to show women across this nation that they are valued, they are worthy, their lives matter, and their stories are real." 💠 “We women do brave hard things because we recognize that brave hard things are what create a more just, a more tender and more loving world” 💠 “Today I hope we can all tap into what lies within us and light it on fire!” Janine Austin Clayton Vivian OTA WANG Lucy Perez Marsha Henderson Carolee Lee Hadine Joffe, MD Liz Powell Sharon Kedar, CFA Jessica J. Good News Friday- Illinois outlaws Step Therapy HER HEALTHX hosted a panel on cancer care for women and we talked about the impact of Step Therapy especially for patients with Cancer. Watch the replay: https://lnkd.in/gUY3x24S What is Step Therapy? If a health plan uses step therapy for certain drugs, it means that a patient can be required to try a lower cost prescription drug that treats a given condition before “stepping up” to a similar-acting, but more expensive drug. The health plan won’t cover the more expensive drug until the lower-cost medication has failed to treat the patient’s condition. Other names for step therapy are “step protocol” and “fail first requirements.” Starting in January, 2025, Step Therapy will be illegal in Illinois. HB 5395 – A wide-ranging medical insurance reform bill that prohibits companies from denying claims and persuading patients to opt for low-cost alternatives for treatments. It also outlaws “step therapy,” where patients have to use cheaper drugs before being approved for more expensive ones. We are committed to improving health outcomes for women. We hope this becomes a best practice in all states. #womenshealth #healthcare The Pink Fund Rx4good HerCsuite®

How does Financial Toxicity impact patients? “Financial toxicity is a silent side effect of cancer that impacts not only treatment adherence but also the emotional and mental health of patients and their families. Without addressing these financial burdens, we risk compromising survivorship outcomes. Patients should never have to choose between life-saving treatment and keeping their home or feeding their family." Molly MacDonald We discussed the challenges and impact of Financial Toxicity in the recent HER HEALTHX program “Let’s Talk Cancer Care”. Giving Tuesday: Give the Gift of Improving Health For Women Every day we hear stories... from patients and healthcare providers about women experiencing Medical Gaslighting. "I can’t tell you how many women I’ve seen who have gone to see numerous doctors, only to be told their issues were stress-related or all in their heads." Dr. Fiona Gupta, Neurologist and Director of Wellness and Health, Dept of Neurosurgery, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City In our Women's Health Survey, when we asked if you have ever had your symptoms dismissed by a healthcare professional, 84% said YES! Women shared these statements with us: “menopause makes all women a little crazy” “these symptoms don’t make sense, it must be something else” “at a certain point, you have to decide to get over it.” Better health outcomes are within our reach! Join us and make a tax deductible donation to help us improve health outcomes for women and sponsor our research study. 85% and Counting Said Yes! When we asked in our survey - has this ever happened to you? A medical professional dismisses or downplays a patient’s symptoms or concerns and it leads to delayed treatment. Thank you Julie Castro Abrams for sharing HER HEALTHX survey. It is the first step in our mission to improving health outcomes for women. 🫶Take the survey and share with all the women you know. Together we can improve health outcomes for women. I wanted to spotlight an important project led by Natalie Benamou from HerCsuite®. In addition to her impactful work there, she also leads HER HEALTHX, a nonprofit focused on transforming women’s healthcare experiences. Right now, HER HEALTHX is running a quick 5-question survey to raise awareness about a critical issue: gaslighting in healthcare. This survey aims to gather insights from patients and caregivers to better understand the challenges and bring attention to this important topic. The survey takes less than 2 minutes to complete, and your voice can make a difference! https://lnkd.in/gH8Gt-rd

Medical Gaslighting is Experienced by Healthcare Providers "I can’t tell you how many women I’ve seen who have gone to see numerous doctors, only to be told their issues were stress-related or all in their heads." Dr. Fiona Gupta, Neurologist and Director of Wellness and Health, Dept of Neurosurgery, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City "Many patients will say that the doctors and medical professionals believe that they are exaggerating their symptoms, or they are making up some of their symptoms." Dr. Martin Rutledge, Neurologist specializing in migraines "Medical gaslighting is usually the result of unconscious biases and knowledge gaps in clinical care rather than conscious bias or malintent on the part of healthcare providers." Chloe Bird, Director of the Center for Health Equity Research at Tufts Medical Center "Women are having to say, ‘No, this isn’t normal for me’ over and over again. What we’re concerned about are those women who don’t say it over again, who just accept what their doctor says, rather than pushing for more testing." Kirsten Sloan, Managing Director of Public Policy for ACS CAN HER HEALTHX mission is improve health outcomes for all women. We encourage you and women you know to take our brief survey: https://lnkd.in/gQF29mqn Together we can make changes happen. #womenshealth #healthcare #improvewomenshealth
