    Senior Principal Scientist bei BASF

Starting December 2024, I am co-chair of the NSC Working Group ‘Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD), Innovation & Regulation’. Thank you to the NSC Steering Group for offering to integrate me in this new role. Using my experiences in BASF’s corporate research, in internal and external projects, I intend to use this role to build bridges between research and implementation. For two decades I lived the often-cited StageGate process, and saw projects initiated and stopped for all sorts of reasons – including safety and sustainability. Here, effective and defendable SSbD screenings create a clear incentive for companies if their customers see a value in the improved balance of all SSbD dimensions. Working in NSC projects, but also with BASF corporate sustainability and operating divisions, I sense that the implementation of more stringent SSbD practices differs a lot between actors of the same value chain and between global regions. On the other hand, the market pull for SSbD practices differs between sectors and applications. Bridges are required both to the industrial practices of sustainability segmentation and to the JRC Guidance and soon-to-be-revised Framework. The projects of the NSC contribute cases, methods and tools that are instrumental in this endeavour – and most importantly, the NSC creates a community and platform. New challenges include the broadened scope of projects in the NSC, reflected in the rebranded name „Network for Safety and sustainability of Chemicals and materials (NSC)”. I am looking forward to addressing those topics within and beyond our NSC community.

Expert Safe and Sustainable Innovation Approach (SSIA) at RIVM; co-chair OECD WPMN SSIA Steering Group (Safe-and-sustainable-by-design (SSbD), regulatory preparedness, trusted environment)

Co-creation in action!! I am really proud to share our latest article on 'A Conceptual Framework for Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design to Support Sustainable Business Model Innovation and New Product Development'. A special thanks to Stella Stoycheva for driving with me the completion of this article. In order to reach a sustainable future and meet the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs), business model innovation (BMI) needs to explore theoretical and practical intersections of the traditional innovation management (IM) and new product development (NPD) processes with sustainability considerations. New environmental and health policy ambitions such as those presented in the European Green Deal and the EU Chemicals Strategy for Sustainability (CSS) challenge traditional IM theories on BMI and NPD processes. The Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) concept is a central element of the CSS and demands a novel approach that integrates innovation with safety, sustainability and circularity of materials, products and processes without compromising their functionality or their technical and/or commercial viability. Importantly, adopting such a concept can prevent regrettable substitutions, future liability and brand image issues for companies. To achieve this, companies must design products with minimal environmental impact, adopt circular economy principles, and ensure social responsibility throughout the value chain, whilst economic viable. By doing so, companies contribute to economic, environmental, and social sustainability. In this perspective, a conceptual framework is proposed on how to achieve sustainable BMI and NPD by integrating traditional IM tools with SSbD using life cycle thinking principles considering external and internal drivers.

On our way to a green and clean Europe 💚 This week's workshop reaffirmed the transformative potential of the Safe and Sustainable by Design (SSbD) framework to drive innovation. Over the past two years, SSbD has evolved from a disruptive proposal to a key component in the innovation process. We are determined to advance with a strong and active stakeholder community as we prepare for the 2025 framework revision.
