🌿 Introducing the Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park Pilot Project 🌿 We’re excited to introduce the HIFOR Pilot Project in Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park in the Republic of Congo. Spanning over 423,000 hectares of untouched rainforest, Nouabalé-Ndoki is a global treasure, celebrated as the first site recognized for its ecological integrity under the Key Biodiversity Areas (KBA) standard in June 2024. This remarkable ecosystem has absorbed over 11 million tons of CO₂ in the past decade, supporting a community of over 2,000 residents, and shelters iconic species such as western lowland gorillas, elephants, and chimpanzees. Yet, as Richard Malonga, WCS’s Republic of Congo Country Director, shared in a recent Mongabay interview: "The area faces threats from illegal hunting, fishing, and logging. The surrounding landscape is increasingly pressured by deforestation, fires, and other challenges.” The HIFOR Pilot Project is a critical step towards addressing these challenges. 🌿 Introducing the Jaú Pilot Project 🌿   HIFOR is excited to launch one of its pilot projects at Jaú National Park (JNP) in Amazonas, Brazil—a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a biodiversity treasure. As the largest National Park in the Amazon Basin, Jaú is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including jaguars, Amazonian manatees, and black caimans. The park also holds significant cultural value, with over 1,000 residents living across 14 communities, including afro-descendent quilombos who are recognized under Brazilian law for their unique cultural heritage.   This pilot project is designed to bring far-reaching benefits to the region. 🌍 Tropical Forests and the Amazon: A Vital Link to Rainfall and Business Resilience 🌱   Scientific research has long demonstrated the critical role tropical forests, especially those with high ecological integrity, play in maintaining global weather patterns. In the Amazon, these forests act as powerful rainmakers, generating and regulating rainfall that supports local ecosystems, agriculture, and even global climate stability. 🌧️   Recent studies highlight that intact forests in the Amazon help to:   🌧 Generate Rainfall: Forests release moisture into the atmosphere through transpiration, creating the conditions necessary for rainfall. 🌎 Regulate Climate: By maintaining forest cover, these ecosystems moderate temperatures and sustain rainfall patterns, both of which are essential for agriculture and business operations. 🌱 Support Biodiversity: Healthy forests are home to diverse species, ensuring ecosystem services that local and global industries depend on. For the private sector, especially industries like agriculture, water management, and energy production, the stability of these weather patterns is directly linked to business resilience. 🌍 What are the key benefits of the HIFOR initiative? 🌱   High integrity tropical forests provide significant climate, #biodiversity and socio-economic benefits. These #forests also supply multiple ecosystem services including the regulation of global climate and rainfall patterns, as well as bio-physical cooling effects at local, regional and global scales.    However, less than 1% of the estimated financial need to protect tropical forests by 2050 is being met.
