Healthy #wetlands are at the centre of human wellbeing and prosperity. From filtering #water to mitigating #climatechange and supporting livelihoods, wetland ecosystems provide vital services that sustain us. At #COP16Colombia countries should prioritise the inclusion of ambitious targets on wetland conservation and restoration in their #NBSAPs to fulfil the #GBF. https://lnkd.in/ejM7tERQ UN Biodiversity Convention on Wetlands

We safeguard and restore wetlands for people and nature.
Over ons
We are dedicated to the conservation and restoration of wetlands. Our vision is a world where wetlands are treasured and nurtured for their beauty, the life they support, and the resources they provide. Based mostly in the developing world, we have 20 regional, national or project offices in all continents and a head office in the Netherlands. We work in over 100 countries and at several, very different scales to tackle the most pressing problems affecting wetlands. With the support of dozens of governmental, NGO and corporate donors and partners, we support over 100 projects. Our work ranges from research and community-based field projects to advocacy and engagement with governments, corporate and international policy fora and conventions. Wetlands International works through partnerships and is supported by contributions from an extensive specialist expert network and tens of thousands of volunteers.

“Peatlands, nature’s carbon vaults, can make or break global climate goals. Found in almost every country, peatlands do not just store vast amounts of carbon, they provide essential services that millions of people rely on daily. Their protection is a fundamental investment in human wellbeing.” Susan C Gardner, Ph.D. Launched at #COP29, the Global Peatland Hotspot Atlas: The State of the World's Peatlands in Maps evaluates the current status of peatlands worldwide and highlights the threats they face from urbanization, industrialization, land use changes, and climate change. 👉 Download the report: https://lnkd.in/eBfuiriR

Despite their critical role in mitigating climate change and providing essential ecosystem services, peatlands face significant threats and remain among the most poorly understood and under-monitored ecosystems globally. The Global Peatland Hotspot Atlas evaluates the current status of peatlands worldwide and highlights the threats they face from urbanization, industrialization, land use changes, and climate change. By compiling a series of maps that analyze the location of peatlands in relation to the threats they are facing, the Atlas offers a comprehensive overview of the most at-risk and vulnerable areas. Constructed wetlands are not just wastewater treatment systems; they’re a testament to how innovation and nature go hand in hand. 🤝 Designed to mimic natural #wetlands, these sustainable ecosystems treat wastewater efficiently, reduce surface water runoff during heavy rains, create thriving habitats for wildlife, and support flood management. 💦 By bringing together algae, aquatic plants, microorganisms, and organic soils, they improve water quality while fostering harmony between plants, soil, and organisms. 🌱 via United Utilities
