The Mercator map projection is widely used in classrooms and for general world map images, but as you move away from the equator and closer to the poles it really distorts the size of areas. In this animation you can see how countries close to the equator barely change, but the countries in the far north and far south shrink dramatically. The Winter Solstice was this past Saturday in the Northern Hemisphere and I’m sure we all noticed the short day! This map shows the difference between the hours of daylight on the summer solstice and on the winter solstice. It ranges from white (24 hours of difference) to the darkest brown (under 4 hours of difference). Note how much farther north Seattle, Washington is from New York and New England!
