**Trigger Warning-Pregnancy Loss** I've shared this story before, but over the weekend, I hosted a Christmas party, and my talented friend drove three hours to attend and brought a single piece of bread pudding, her famous and my favorite dessert, just for me. 🖤 Why is this bread pudding significant? In May 2023, I was standing behind the bar when panic hit my heart like a truck had just come ramming through the service window. I was miscarrying while on the clock; with a full bar, busy dining room, and employees everywhere, there was nowhere to hide. I couldn't think and had no words. All I could say was, 'No, no, please stop.' I was lucky to be working alongside an incredible chef, mother, business owner, and friend who knew immediately what was happening. She hugged me and sent me home, and no words were exchanged. When I woke up the next morning, there was bread pudding at my door. My life changed that day in so many ways. While it was devastating and a day that I will remember every detail, the simple gesture and kindness I was shown are literally indescribable. 💞 I often reflect on how my experiences as a woman in hospitality and the restaurant industry are not unique. Miscarriages are common, as are the stories of working behind the bar while in labor or returning to work just a few weeks after giving birth while still wearing an adult diaper. Having to pump in the storage room and bring kids to work while prepping in the kitchen before or after school. These small examples and countless others highlight the often challenging experiences that women in hospitality face. As many of you know, I love to share stories in our industry, and I am working on a special project for the women in it. I am looking for twenty women in #hospitality, #foodandbeverage, #restaurants, etc., who will be willing to share their experience or story of being a mother or a female-specific issue you have faced while working in the #hospitalityindustry. She went back to school after being home with four of us for fourteen years and was able to have access to books, coursework, research, and set up her tutoring business. Tomorrow is Savannah Bananas Day, and I am "peely" excited about it! 🥳🍌 When I got the first email about the lottery to attend one of the Savannah Bananas games and saw Nationals Park was one of the locations, I instantly set my alarm for the submission date! The submission date came. I entered, and four months later… I won!!!💃 When we lived in Charleston, attending a game was on my bucket list, but when we finally made plans to do it, the world shut down, and well, life has been a little busy over the past four years. So now I not only get to attend a game with my better half, but I’m attending a game with a sold-out crowd of over 40,000 people in my hometown, and it’s my birthday weekend. 🎂 I can not wait to witness the best of the ‘bunch’ regarding a fans-first experience! 🤩 For someone who lives on creating memorable experiences within our industry, I know I am in for a Grand Slam Time! A year ago on June 8th, I shared Mark Glenister's post about #AnthonyBourdain, acknowledging the loss of such an influential man in the culinary and hospitality space. Despite appearing to have it all, he was silently battling mental health issues. His struggles, which may have been private to him, are now being openly discussed by many of us. Anthony shared his passion for food, travel, and embracing life with the world. While we admired his content and unapologetic attitude, he was facing the same daily challenges as many others dealing with depression, anxiety, and the prevalent issue of impostor syndrome. After I posted this, thousands of people read it. I was amazed by the number of individuals who resonated with the impact Anthony had on our industry during his life and even after his passing. As Anthony once eloquently put it: "The essence of..." cool, after all, is not giving a f***. And let's face it: I most definitely give a f*** now. I give a huge f***. The hugest." I said it then and will say it again: He may have felt that his flame was out, but an ember, a spark, was left behind, and it has started a wildfire.
