Alternative to Braille - ELIA Life Technologies ELIA Life Technology spent the last 12 years developing a new tactile alphabet for the blind that can be learned, read, and retained eight times more efficiently than braille. Once this revolutionary alphabet was validated, ELIA then partnered with Humanfactors to develop a series of assistive products that will deliver the tactile ELIA alphabet to the visually impaired, enabling independence through literacy. Based on this unique working relationship, Humanfactors has provided not only design, engineering, prototyping, and software development services, but has also helped ELIA write, win, and execute grants from NIST, NSF, and NIH in order to help sustain research and development. https://lnkd.in/griiV8zv

Lavatory Innovations for Kohler Humanfactors helped Kohler elevate the utilitarian medicine cabinet from a mirrored repository of excess toothbrushes and old shaving cream cans into a modern, purpose-driven product, providing users with cold storage, digital media, and aesthetics befitting a proper lavatory. Conventional medicine cabinets were specially engineered to provide refrigeration for the ever-increasing organic bath-and-body market for their luxury division Robern. Experimentation with the mirror surface itself allowed for an integrated LCD screen to provide users with the morning news. Task lighting was designed not only for usability and efficacy, but also to bathe the bathroom environment with style and elegance. https://lnkd.in/gan33cVq

Boutique Housewares for Lifetime Brands Diversity in Modularity. By developing one small housewares innovation, Humanfactors provided Lifetime Brands with a wealth of product diversity. To satisfy the fickle housewares consumer within a crowded market, Humanfactors developed a single, easy-to-manufacture, low-cost universal centerpiece—a connector that enabled Lifetime Brands to integrate 50 different utensil heads with 3 distinctive body styles while withstanding 40 pounds of pullout force. This enabled Lifetime Brands to provide their private-label customers with three customizable product lines for the development costs of one, and opened up a world of housewares to companies without the means to develop their own products from scratch. https://lnkd.in/ew_QVzUy

Broach Handle - Stryker Orthopaedics Heavy, overbuilt, all-stainless, hard angled, slippery. Surgeons felt that Stryker’s broach handle was a relic from an era when instruments were (and many still are) exercises in mere functionality. The broach handle is a deceptively tricky instrument since it’s handled in a variety of ways throughout different scenarios. As with any instrument, it should be easy to identify, remove, and pass from its instrument tray between nurse and surgeon; as a reamer, it needs to provide a secure, comfortable grip while wet and under strain; as an inserter, it needs to protect the surgeon during impaction/extraction while providing a generous striking target; it needs to provide an intuitive, easy-to-operate quick-connect for a variety of attachments. And it must perform these disparate tasks as a balanced, lightweight, beautiful instrument that enhances Stryker’s global brand. https://lnkd.in/g6UEjrwG
