  • The New College of Florida is facing backlash after a video taken in August 2024 has resurfaced of hundreds of books being discarded, many tied to the now-terminated Gender Studies program. Activists and students have expressed outrage over the disposal, claiming it reflects the college’s shifting priorities under Governor Ron DeSantis’ policies. A school representative stated that some books were removed as part of routine "weeding" processes and due to Florida law restrictions on selling or donating materials. However, critics argue the discarded books, including works by Black, Latinx, LGBTQ+, and female authors, symbolize a broader dismissal of diversity and inclusion. "These were readable books. These were books that did not have tears in the pages. Have clean covers," Activist Zander Moricz, Executive Director of Social Equity Through Education Alliance, told ABC News. "These are books that could have been used, and it's truly unforgivable." ______ 📝 Hy-Lo News Staff Report 📸🔁 @attorneycrump @abcnews . .
