Still Serving - Veterans in Local Government #vetsinlocalgovt #icmaveterans #vlgmf
About us
The International City/County Management Association (ICMA) Veterans are led by the ICMA Veterans Advisory Committee (VAC). The mission of the VAC is to enhance local government through the inclusion of Veterans who share the passion, skills, and knowledge to succeed in public service. This VAC uses these three pillars to raise awareness and promote veterans in local government: • Raising visibility on municipal government as a career among active duty and transitioning military personnel. • Building awareness of the skills and knowledge that veterans bring to the profession. • Develop and strengthen relationships between the veteran community and local government. ICMA Veterans achieve their mission through education, programming, outreach, and awareness. If you would like to help us with our mission - please consider making a contribution via the "Give" button at the top of the page. Please note Veterans Advisory Committee (VAC) in the "write us a comment" field to direct the contribution to our efforts. The marquee program offered is the Veterans Local Government Management Fellowship (VLGMF). The VLGMF is a 12 to 25-week Department of Defense approved Career Skills (SkillBridge) Program. The VLGMF provides transitioning service members with management training and hands-on experience in the local government environment with the goal of preparing them for smooth transitions into local government careers. Congrats to Vincent Martinez, MPA for his new position as a Management Analyst with the City of Sierra Vista. Another example of #stillserving in local government after his time in the Army. I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Management Analyst at City of Sierra Vista! A bittersweet ending to close out 2024 and welcome in 2025! I will forever cherish the lessons learned, challenges faced, people met and memories made in the world's finest Army! I would not be where I am today without taking that leap of faith when I left home on July 29th, 2019. I am eteranlly grateful for the chance taken and opportunity provided by the City of Sierra Vista has given me with the opportunity to learn and develop via a Career Skills Program (CSP) Internship that has lead into a full-time position. I look forward to the new challenges that lie ahead and making a lasting career serving the community. I have felt welcomed and a member of the team since day one and am ready to elevate our HR department to the next level! To any fellow veterans or transitioning service memebrs reading this, please know that your opportunities are endless in finding your next career post military service. Utilize your network, take everyday small steps to the job you desire, communicate often and be patient. Stay the course, have faith and always remember you are not alone! Happy New Year!
