As we close our offices for the holiday we look back on some of the key advocacy milestones from our flagship partnership with Sinapi Aba Saving and Loans, the IDP Rising Schools Program, since its inception in 2009. The last 15 years has seen more low fee private schools accessing finance and being recognized as key contributors to education systems. We look forward to continuing working with great partners and peers on improving acces to, and quality of, all education for all children, now.

About us
IDP Foundation (IDPF) is a private non-profit family foundation focused on innovation, development and progress by supporting local actors deliver sustainable solutions to complex global issues. We work with partners in Ghana and Kenya to deliver market-based solutions focused on improving education in underserved communities. We’re passionate about strengthening the global education system via an all-hands-on-deck approach, giving children in all settings access to quality education. As an international team with a long-standing presence in Ghana, we’re focused on thinking outside-the-box on the issues impacting learning outcomes in low to lower-middle income countries. Our focus is two-fold. Firstly, we actively fund organizations who support low-fee private schools today, while telling the story of their organic nature by empowering the voice of local actors and beneficiaries. Secondly, we focus on championing the mixed economy of education provision – and the contribution of non-state actors – to be recognized and integrated into national education systems. We believe in the power of partnerships to achieve our mission. Our aim is to support sustainable community-built education provision, as part of an affordable non-state sector (ANS) that complements public education systems and is governed within a central framework. We’re guided by the principle that the best way forward is to empower local actors to create change. Our core values are: Þ Building capability beyond aid is the most effective answer Þ Designing market-based solutions for the underprivileged supports economic development Þ Working in partnership and empowering local communities is key to sustainability Þ Advocating for effective alliances harnesses the power of the collective Þ Being prepared to embrace risks leads to more inclusive results Þ Acting as a catalyst leverages further funding Our global team are located in the US, Ghana and the UK.

To reach education goals by 2030, Sub-Saharan Africa needs an additional 15 million teachers (UNESCO 2023). There is a lack of information around the number of non-state teachers in Sub-Saharan Africa, although reports tell us that around 20-30% of learners globally are educated in the affordable non-state sector. Low-fee private school teachers are often overlooked when it comes to support, however, according to a Learning in Ghana report form 2018, 41% of private school teachers versus 18% of government teachers reported feeling very motivated. Here we hear from Ezequiel, one of the many unseen low-fee private school teachers dedicated to delivering education in underserved communities, who calls for support for all teachers and all children in all settings. Insight of the week 🔦 All teachers need to be recognized by the government and education stakeholders as contributing to SDG 4 and therefore should be supported. The affordable non-state sector (ANS) is contributing to an increasing pool of teachers in low- and middle-income countries and there needs to be more innovative pathways towards qualifications. IDPF is passionate about supporting all teachers, in all school settings, now. Last week's 2024 Ghana National Education Week, under the theme 'The Education Transformation Agenda; Evidence for 2017' provided a great opportunity for stakeholders to offer the ministry feedback on education sector policies and priorities. As a member of the GPE Local Education Group (LEG), IDPF contributed to LEG's statement to the Ministry which was presented during a main event. Among a number of priority areas, the statement emphasized the need for inclusion of the non-state sector in the National Standardized Testing as well as improved sector coordination and funding, which gained support from many development partners.
