About us
We create learning experiences, using improvisation to teach business skills. The ability to think on your feet, arrive at solutions, and communicate in ways that bring people together are the skills of improvisation. These are the keys to innovation and business success, yet these skills are often overlooked. ImprovEdge was founded in 1998 by Karen Hough, a professional actor/improviser turned business executive. With a nationwide ensemble and the research assistance of Wharton Business School, ImprovEdge develops powerful and effective corporate training, workshops, orientations, conferences and keynote speeches based on the essential principles of improvisation and applies it to clients in industries as diverse as finance, manufacturing, law, retail, and technology.

Great minds, great venue! The U.S. Department of Commerce and International Trade Administration for the Middle East and Africa did the hard of work strategic planning. We were honored to be guests at National Army Museum in Virginia for the offsite. The docent reminded us, "The US Army has had to adapt and transform, often overnight, for hundreds of years." Sounds like improvisation to me! How are you inspiring and aligning your team? #strategy #leadership #improvchangeseverything Thomas Bruns Sherry Lewis-Khanna Naomi Wiegler Dominique M. During NBBI’s Employee Appreciation Week, Karen Hough Majidzadeh of ImprovEdge delivered an engaging and interactive presentation, showing how improvisation techniques like active listening, adaptability, and quick thinking can enhance communication, problem-solving, and innovation. Her dynamic approach made the session both enjoyable and valuable. "Karen’s presentation was a fantastic opportunity for both individual growth and team improvement,” NBBI Executive Director Joel Amato said. “It emphasized how shifting our mindset can help all of us work more efficiently while boosting job satisfaction. Great leaders are always learning, and mentorship helps unlock new perspectives, build resilience, and sharpen decision-making skills. What leadership lessons have you gained through mentorship? #LeadershipDevelopment #MentorshipMatters #ExecutiveGrowth #LeadershipJourney #ContinuousLearning
Multiple roads to growth exist. This exciting leader cohort at ODW Logistics has delved deeply into who they are and how they can stretch. Using Hogan Assessments, ImprovEdge coaching and workshops, internal #mentorship, and executive interviews and panels #executiveinsight, they are learning more and more about themselves, their teams, their peers and leaders. Sometimes, it's uncomfortable! Their courage in being vulnerable and trying new techniques and considering new perspectives is impressive. An internal allusion. #Callbacks help your brain build connections between pieces of information. As a speaker #callbacks make you memorable. #PresentationSkills #ExecutiveCommunication #Improvisation
#Callbacks are a central technique in great improv and comedy, AND an incredible tool for creating impact when speaking! At ImprovEdge we've been teaching this for years. Callbacks bring an idea back that was introduced earlier (and possibly forgotten by the audience) in a way that connects it to the present moment. By creating a bridge for the audience, you strengthen their memory of you and the event. I've used this tool as a Berrett-Koehler Publishers, Inc. Magazine and Association for Talent Development (ATD) author and a #leadership facilitator and #ExecutiveCoach and keynote speaker. I was thrilled to read new research on this concept from Charan Ranganath in a Harvard Business Review article recently. To wit: "During the callback, we saw greater activation of the brain circuitry involved in forming new memories, and the callback helped our subjects retain more information from the story." (link to research below) Simple tool: Understand what came before. If there is a concept that's been introduced to your audience by another speaker that links to yours, refer to it! Remind them of the link, and they'll remember both concepts more clearly. In addition, remind them of concepts YOU introduced earlier. Think of yourself as a bridge builder, creating pathways in the minds of your listeners. Have fun, and keep improvising! #speaking #leadership #improvchangeseverything #storytelling Melissa Tilk Smolko Haley Boehning Doug McIntyre Nick Bandy Bindu Garapaty, Psy.D.
