At the Advanced Recycling Conference in Cologne on November 20th, our partners Oscar Vernáez from Neste and Laura Strobl from Fraunhofer Institute for Process Engineering and Packaging IVV presented insights from the INCREACE project. The presentation highlighted innovative methods to increase the recycling rate of plastics from Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) in the EU — aiming to boost the current 18% recycling rate to an impressive 63%! Key topics included: ✅ The cascade recycling approach utilizing mechanical, solvent-based, and chemical recycling technologies. ✅ Results from advanced dissolution and pyrolysis processes for recovering high-quality polymers. ✅ A focus on circular design and regulatory landscape to drive systemic change. They also had to chance to discuss advanced recycling technologies and innovative solutions with the other attendees. It was a fruitful conference! # CircularEconomy # AdvancedRecycling # WEEE # Recycling # ElectronicRecycling
About us
We are a European Commission-funded project that will contribute to a circular, autonomous and resilient plastics value chain as a part of the European Strategy for Plastics and the green and digital transition. INCREACE will pave the way to increased uptake of post-consumer recycled plastics in added value products through developing innovative and interdisciplinary solutions along the entire plastics recycling value chain. We follow a systemic approach with the following focused actions: ♻ Ensure traceability of recycled materials ♻ Develop relevant verification methods for recycled content ♻ Improve pre-processing of plastic waste through a data-driven approach ♻Increase the recycling yield of mixed plastics and contribute to EU broadly accepted procedures to control the consistent quality of recyclates ♻Pave the way towards recyclable-by-design plastics ♻Push current boundaries for new applications of recycled plastics in challenging applications where the current share is still zero to very low ♻Enhance engagement of the society through active collaboration and empower people and communities as actors of the circular plastics transition ♻Provide a systemic framework for an enhanced uptake of recycled plastics in added value products The consortium brings together key actors from different sectors, such as researchers, recyclers (mechanical, chemical, solvent-based), product designers, material and component manufacturers, OEMs, software developers, an EPR system and consultants.

Last week, we held the 5th General Assembly of the INCREACE project in Freising, Germany. The sessions were filled with insightful discussions on Recyclability Assessment tools, Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) of recycling paths, policy messages as well as the widely debated mass-balancing approach. During our first day of three we dove deep into technical discussions on optimizing and testing of the INCREACE recycled material for our Business Cases from Skaza REthink plastics. Respect LIFE. , Cabka, #Philips and Vorwerk Group. With fresh insights and solid next steps, we are looking forward to continuing our work on advancing the circular economy and increasing recycled content in value-added products. Stay tuned for more updates! #INCREACE #CircularEconomy #Recycling #Sustainability #Innovation

The Life Cycle Engineering research group of SIM2 KU Leuven has investigated the effectiveness of density-based sorting processes for separating recyclable plastics used in electronics and cars. With the use of spectroscopic characterisation techniques and lab-scale density-separation experiments, it was possible to assess the capabilities of density-based sorting processes and to indicate the optimal use of this type of sorting techniques for separating post-consumer plastic fractions. The goal of the Cabka business case is to add recycled PP into pallets showing electrostatic discharge (ESD) characteristics, keeping the ESD and required mechanical properties of the standard pallets. To encourage consumers to buy fewer electronic devices, use them longer, and return them once they are no longer needed, we must focus on changing their behavior. Insights from history, various cultures, and even grieving processes show that increased visibility and a sense of community can significantly enhance people's involvement and mitigate negative feelings. That is the conclusion of a study conducted by Flora Poppelaars, PhD and Andische Azad, which they presented at the Electronic Goes Green conference in Berlin.
