The suffering of veterinary professionals is rarely seen or acknowledged at the societal level. Veterinary professionals are healthcare workers too. Full stop. We rely on them not only for the health of our beloved furry companions, but also to aid in public health and ensure the safety of our food chain. When our society dismisses them as less than, it allows the harsh working conditions in the veterinary field to continue and can heighten their suffering. We need to start valuing the well-being and happiness of veterinary workers. We can be better. Last week, on one of my days off, I had the absolute joy of working alongside 4-year-olds who were brimming with curiosity about what it’s like to be an animal doctor. Together, we “examined” their stuffed animals, listened to their hearts, took their blood pressure, and carefully bandaged their "injuries." Their excitement and wonder reminded me of why I fell in love with this profession in the first place. But here’s the reality: the current rhetoric in the veterinary world is often discouraging. Many of us hesitate to recommend this path to family or friends. I’m frequently asked if I’d want my daughters to become veterinarians. My answer? Yes—if that’s what THEY choose. And I will wholeheartedly support them every step of the way. As veterinary professionals, I believe we have a responsibility to nurture and advocate for the future of our profession. This work doesn’t wait for the perfect time. It begins now, today. Whether it’s mentoring young minds, supporting our colleagues, or creating a more sustainable and joyful environment, every action creates ripples that will be felt 20 years from now.
