Congratulations to the Purdue AI Racing team, who competed in the Indy Autonomous Challenge at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway this month as part of the 2025 Consumer Electronics Show! "For the first time, Purdue AI Racing competed in Tier 2, which is a two-car passing competition. During the 30-minute race, Purdue AI Racing overtook the car of University of California, Berkeley’s AI Racing Tech Team at 120 mph and broke a personal record of 159 mph." We’re an autonomous racing team – why is someone driving? For our next competition, we are taking on a new challenge: road courses. With this new challenge, braking and control in the chicanes is paramount to our success. This represents a new curveball for our motion-planning and controls teams. On the screen is dSPACE’s Aurelion, a vehicle software suite we use to simulate races before ever stepping foot on track. So, combing back from our CES exhibition race, we wanted a way to manually control our car with a wheel on track to give our members and intuition with what it feels like to drive the car. This allows us to, for example, build an intuition for our brake points or test out taking corners at different speeds. Building an intuition for racing and the car’s limits is much easier to do when controlling the car. And of course, we can’t resist a little competition. Running hot laps in the simulator has turned into a friendly rivalry—and an awesome way to push the car to its limits while having fun. Indy Autonomous Challenge UVA Engineering

I am glad to share that our paper, er.autopilot 1.1, has been published in the IEEE Transactions on Field Robotics and will also be presented in May at IEEE RAS ICRA 2025 Conference in Atlanta! In "er.autopilot 1.1: A Software Stack for Autonomous Racing on Oval and Road Course Tracks", we present an updated version of our initial stack used by our team Unimore Racing for the first two seasons of the Indy Autonomous Challenge. 🏎️ It includes some interesting features such as: - LiDAR-based localization - Sideslip angle estimation exploiting the Pacejka tire model and the LiDAR Odometry - Refined vehicle model for the Model Predictive Controller - Radar-based local control - Analysis of the performance at the tire limits at Texas Motor Speedway and insights from a severe crash in this scenario - Updates made to make our stack work on road course racetracks, in particular at the F1 racetrack Autodromo Nazionale Monza. 🔗 Download the paper at: https://lnkd.in/d8Zuy2aX If you don't have access to the platform to download it contact me and I'll be happy to share it with you in private. 🙏 Thanks to all the coauthors: Danilo Caporale, Francesco Gatti, Alessandro Toschi, Nicola Musiu, Micaela Verucchi, Francesco Prignoli, Davide Malatesta, André Fialho Jesus, Andrea Finazzi, Francesco Amerotti, Fabio Bagni, Eugenio Mascaro, Pietro Musso, Marko Bertogna as well as Alexander Liniger and Andrea Giove for their extremely important contribution to the previous version of the software stack. #autonomous #racing #icra25
