Cavalier Autonomous Racing

Cavalier Autonomous Racing, led by UVA Professor Madhur Behl, won the time trial competition with a 52.628-second lap on the historic 2.5-mile oval, averaging 171.012 mph (273.619 kph) and pulling 2.25 lateral Gs in the turns. During the winning lap, we set a new world record for autonomous speed on a racetrack, reaching 184 mph (296 kph). This also marks the first time a U.S.-based team has topped the podium at an Indy Autonomous Challenge competition! UVA Engineering

After bursting onto the scene in 2021, UVA Engineering’s Cavalier Autonomous Racing team had to overcome two years of heartbreak. We clinched 2nd place at the Indy Autonomous Challenge at #ces2024 ! 🏆 I am thrilled beyond words to share Cavalier Autonomous Racing team's achievement. Our journey this year was nothing short of extraordinary – starting as an unqualified team, we qualified 1st and became the top-seeded contender completing multiple autonomous high-speed overtakes at 143mph. I'm incredibly proud of all the students. They've dedicated thousands of hours over the past year, tirelessly enhancing every aspect of our autonomous racing stack. It's gratifying to see their hard work come together and our team's capabilities on full display. We will only improve from here on.
