The University of Virginia’s premiere autonomous racing team competing in the Indy Autonomous Challenge.

About us

We are The University of Virginia’s competitive autonomous racing team. In motorsport racing, there is a saying: ‘ If everything seems under control, then you are not going fast enough’. We are designing autonomous racing AI with this as its objective function. Led by Prof Madhur Behl at UVA, the Cavalier Autonomous Racing has been competing in the Indy Autonomous Challenge since 2021. The team won the 2024 time trial competition with a 52.628-second lap on the historic 2.5-mile IMS oval, averaging 171.012 mph (273.619 kph) and pulling 2.25 lateral Gs in the turns. During the winning lap, we set a new world record for autonomous speed on a racetrack, reaching 184 mph (296 kph). This also marks the first time a U.S.-based team has topped the podium at an Indy Autonomous Challenge competition.
