Cavalier Autonomous Racing, led by UVA Professor Madhur Behl, won the time trial competition with a 52.628-second lap on the historic 2.5-mile oval, averaging 171.012 mph (273.619 kph) and pulling 2.25 lateral Gs in the turns. During the winning lap, we set a new world record for autonomous speed on a racetrack, reaching 184 mph (296 kph). This also marks the first time a U.S.-based team has topped the podium at an Indy Autonomous Challenge competition! UVA Engineering

About us
We are The University of Virginia’s competitive autonomous racing team. In motorsport racing, there is a saying: ‘ If everything seems under control, then you are not going fast enough’. We are designing autonomous racing AI with this as its objective function. Led by Prof Madhur Behl at UVA, the Cavalier Autonomous Racing has been competing in the Indy Autonomous Challenge since 2021. The team won the 2024 time trial competition with a 52.628-second lap on the historic 2.5-mile IMS oval, averaging 171.012 mph (273.619 kph) and pulling 2.25 lateral Gs in the turns. During the winning lap, we set a new world record for autonomous speed on a racetrack, reaching 184 mph (296 kph). This also marks the first time a U.S.-based team has topped the podium at an Indy Autonomous Challenge competition.

After bursting onto the scene in 2021, UVA Engineering’s Cavalier Autonomous Racing team had to overcome two years of heartbreak. Under the steady leadership of Madhur Behl, associate professor of computer science and systems and information engineering, they’ve roared back — almost to the winner’s circle. Check out UVA Today’s story of their journey from an unqualified team hoping to make the field to top-seeded contender and runner-up in the Indy Autonomous Challenge competition: https://lnkd.in/eK7gmm3K

We clinched 2nd place at the Indy Autonomous Challenge at #ces2024 ! 🏆 I am thrilled beyond words to share Cavalier Autonomous Racing team's achievement. Our journey this year was nothing short of extraordinary – starting as an unqualified team, we qualified 1st and became the top-seeded contender completing multiple autonomous high-speed overtakes at 143mph. I'm incredibly proud of all the students. They've dedicated thousands of hours over the past year, tirelessly enhancing every aspect of our autonomous racing stack. It's gratifying to see their hard work come together and our team's capabilities on full display. We will only improve from here on. A massive shoutout to FTM Institute of Automotive Technology TUM racing team for taking the top spot, and a heartfelt congratulations to all of our peers in pit lane - Team KAIST, MIT-PITT-RW, Autonomous Tiger Racing, TII Unimore Racing, AI Racing Tech, PoliMOVE Autonomous Racing Team and Black & Gold Autonomous Racing We are immensely grateful to our sponsors UVA Engineering, Hexagon AB , NI (National Instruments), Jiajun Zhu, and The Jefferson Trust for their unwavering support 🏁 University of Virginia UVA Engineering Link Lab #HOOSRacing #autonomousracing #autonomousvehicles #robotics #ai #safeai
