Since late Saturday night, Indy DPW crews have been on 12-hour shifts to clear snow and treat roads across our city. Today, crews will continue to focus on connector streets - 300+ centerline miles in denser residential areas. These connector streets link neighborhoods and residential areas to the secondary streets and thoroughfares already plowed by Indy DPW Snow Force on standard routes. Introduced in 2020, this network of “connector” streets replaces the previous “six-inch” rule for engaging plows only after six inches of snow has fallen. This new policy allows Snow Force leadership to direct Indy DPW crews or contractors to address the residential “connector” network as soon as the weather warrants (e.g. if only four inches of snow has fallen but temperatures are expected to remain below freezing, and drifting is expected). Indy DPW crews are continuing on 12-hour shifts and will begin clearing connector streets today, some of which run through residential areas. Additionally, we have started clearing Indy’s trail network, providing safer access for pedestrians and cyclists. So far, we have used 3,628 tons of salt, plowed 32,357 miles, and logged over 5,600 man-hours. Indy DPW is out continuing to fight the snow! Our crew members are retreating the roads and clearing snow where necessary. This fight began yesterday and our teams remain committed to keeping Indy streets safe. Please drive slowly, stay alert, and give our crews room to keep the roads clear. As a gentle reminder, keep extra resources stocked in your vehicle in case you need them. #IndyDPW
