The Innovation and New Ventures Office (INVO) at Northwestern University inspires and nurtures innovation across campus. To this end, INVO energizes entrepreneurial initiatives, drives commercialization potential, and facilitates practical uses for intellectual property through partnering or new ventures. INVO scouts for research that could have commercialization potential and provide guidance on how to maximize the impact of the innovations to society. The office is often involved in coordinating entrepreneurial and innovation initiatives across all schools within Northwestern. In doing this, INVO hopes to enhance the value and impact of inventions by facilitating alliances to further technology validation and possibly to increase funding. INVO also promotes broad dissemination of inventions through an extensive corporate and investor network. Our Investor Advisory Board composed of investors, entrepreneurs and business executives oversees all activities and provides financial and management mentorship. Finally, Northwestern protects and manages the inventors' and the University's intellectual property rights through the licensing division of INVO. Each invention is assigned an invention manager who coaches the inventor during the various phases - invention disclosure, determination of patentability, licensing negotiations and intellectual property management.

Continued strong news from Ovid Therapeutics on OV329, a rationally designed, next-generation GABA-AT inhibitor for the potential treatment of drug-resistant #seizures, developed in the laboratories of Northwestern University Professor Richard Silverman. 🌟 Highlights from attending BIO 2024! 🌟 I had the privilege of attending my first BIO conference (in San Diego!) with Chicago Biomedical Consortium and Northwestern University's tech transfer office, and it was an busy week of learning and networking. 👩⚖️ Judging pitches at the Startup Stadium: This was a great opportunity to not only see some promising startups, but also practice some rapid analysis of early-stage oncology assets. 🙋♀️ "Organizing to Derisk Academic Assets" panel: Michelle Burbea Hoffmann moderated a great discussion with Aleks Baranczak, Lisa Dhar, Jonathan Young, and Raheleh H. about finding and funding promising biotechnologies that emerge from academic labs. 💜 Keynote with Viola Davis: She's not only an incredible actress, but also such a skilled orator! She brought the whole room to tears while discussing her mother's experience in memory care. My favorite quote from the event: "You are born worthy." 🤝 Partnering meetings for Northwestern startups and assets: Met dozens of VCs, biopharma BD reps, and ecosystem builders with Michael Fiske and Lindsay Stolzenburg, PhD. 🤩 Exploring afterparties with the Chicago contingent: Great friends, good food, lots of acrobats! Had a great time this past weekend at Chicago Innovation's Illinois Student Invention Convention! This was my first time being a mentor at two local middle schools during the program. Two of 'my' teams were in the group pictured winning an honorable mention; congrats to Melanie for inventing BeeBear, a way to increase emotional intelligence and improve socialization; and to Winter, Zyra, and Lance for inventing Modifeyes, glasses that change prescription with the twist of a dial. And of course a shoutout to their teachers Ms. Shutters and Ms. Koepke who work tirelessly to teach problem solving skills to their students!
