Remember the child-like excitement of wonder and curiosity and exploration from travel and camping trips from earlier stress-free times? Ani and team have somehow bottled this indescribable feeling, supercharged it with curious and open and brilliant minds from many different walks of life, and curated a weekend in the woods complete with barista flat whites and a dance floor! It was the single most inspiring and thought provoking weekend I had in the whole year, and changed the way I pursue my medium term profesh trajectory. The recent Santa Ana wind event and the devastating wildfires in the Greater Los Angeles area serve as a stark reminder of the increasing severity and frequency of fire risk in California. Wildfires in Southern California are historically uncommon in January. While prolonged drought and strong winds are not unusual for this time of year, shifting precipitation and wind patterns driven by climate change could increase the likelihood of these conditions occurring simultaneously. This convergence of factors may lead to a higher risk of extreme fire events in the region. At First Street, our wildfire models predicted this heightened risk, identifying both the Altadena and Pacific Palisades areas as among the top 1% areas for wildfire exposure in terms of property damage and loss. Unfortunately, these predictions are becoming reality, with major implications for homeowners and insurers alike:  • 𝗔𝘃𝗮𝗶𝗹𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: State insurance regulations have kept premiums low for years, driving private insurers out of the market.   • 𝗢𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲: The California FAIR Plan has grown over 3x since 2015, covering $458B in exposure but backed by less than $1B in capital.   • 𝗔𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆: Some zip codes have seen non-renewals spike by nearly 800%, leaving 1 in 10 homes without private insurance in the hardest-hit areas.  California's recent adoption of climate-informed insurance pricing is a step forward, but it also highlights a certainty around the growing cost burden for residents.
