🔔 The new UNECE publication provides guidance to national #statistics offices on how they can provide #data on #ClimateChange mitigation, adaptation and just transition, as well as to measure climate-related costs. While primarily intended to provide guidance to national statistical offices, it may also be useful for other producers of climate change-related statistics and data and policymakers to understand the potential of national statistical offices in this area. The publication was prepared by a dedicated UNECE Task Force between 2022 and 2024, consisting of representatives from 16 countries and 13 international organizations. 🌟 The Role of Statistical Associations in Complex and Evolving National Data Governance Regimes 🌟 It was an honor to present yesterday at the 👉🏻 2024 Statistics Week Taiwan 👈🏻 at Academia Sinica in Taipei, Institute of Statistical Science. In my talk, "The Role of Statistical Associations in Complex and Evolving National Data Governance Regimes," I delved into the profound shifts we are witnessing in the data landscape: 🌐 The digital revolution has brought an explosion of data, reshaping how we govern, share, and utilize it. ⚖️ Amid this transformation, data governance frameworks must navigate intricate challenges: balancing privacy and innovation. 🤝 Statistical associations are uniquely positioned to lead this charge by fostering ethical standards, building capacities, and advocating for robust frameworks that serve both society and the public good. Key takeaways from my presentation: 1️⃣ As data becomes ubiquitous, statistical ecosystems must prioritize trust, and transparency. 2️⃣ Collaboration across governments, private sectors, and academic institutions is essential to ensure the ethical use of data. 3️⃣ Statistical associations must act as both custodians of ethical practices and as innovators, championing methods and policies that meet the complexity of modern data environments. The Prize is awarded for the best paper in the field of official statistics written by a young statistician. In addition to monetary prizes, the first-place winner receives travel funds to present the paper at an international conference chosen in conjunction with the IAOS. 🌐 Shaping the Future of Official Statistics and Data Ecosystems 🌐 I had the privilege of participating in yet another thought-provoking panel discussion at the United Nations World Data Forum, organized by Swiss Federal Statistical Office FSO, Statistics Poland, International Association for Official Statistics - IAOS, Polish Statistical Association - PTS. The dialogue delved deep into the evolving role of national statistical offices (#NSOs) and the broader data ecosystem. Key highlights from my interventions: 1️⃣ Core business of NSOs It's vital to remain focused on our primary mission: providing high-quality, relevant, and accessible statistics to inform society. 👉🏻 This involves resisting the temptation to take on roles better suited for other stakeholders! 👈🏻 2️⃣ Adapting to change With the rise of new technologies and the increasing demand for real-time data, NSOs must embrace innovation while upholding transparency, trust, and ethical standards. This includes re-skilling our teams to harness AI, machine learning, and advanced data integration methods. 3️⃣ Collaboration is key Addressing the challenges of the data ecosystem, ranging from diverse data sources to cybersecurity, requires strong partnerships at national, regional, and global levels.    🌟 Our collective mission is clear: ensure that statistics remain the backbone of informed decision-making while adapting to an ever-evolving landscape. 🌟 🙏🏻 A big thank you to my fellow panelists: ☆ Sian Rasdale, ☆ Prof. Dr. Georges-Simon Ulrich, ☆ Elsa Dhuli, for contributing such exquisite expertise and energy to our discussion. Organized by the UN World Data Forum Programme Committee, the session focused on strengthening global, regional, and national data ecosystems, particularly through sustainable financing, innovative partnerships, and enhanced data governance. ➡️ I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to ☆ Camilo Andrés Méndez (DANE-Colombia) and my fellow panelists for their insightful contributions. Poland's dashboard on Ukrainian refugees is one such example, blending private and public data to provide actionable insights. ▫️Tackling challenges such as data ownership debates, conflicting institutional ambitions, and barriers to accessing private data while maintaining trust and transparency. ▫️Advocating for strong leadership by national statistical offices to ensure improved governance and coordination, and embedding statistical capacity into long-term planning and investment. 🌟 Data is not just a tool for development but a shared responsibility. 🌟 Building trust, fostering collaboration, and emphasizing shared societal goals are fundamental to unlocking the potential of data for sustainable development. ▫️As I mentioned during the session, sometimes it's the human connection and shared mission that turn partnerships into tangible outcomes. ▫️Let's continue to work together to strengthen data ecosystems that are resilient, inclusive, and impactful.
