The International Foundation for Ethics and Audit (IFEA) is a non-profit organization that supports high-quality, international audit, assurance, quality management, and international ethics and independence standards for professional accountants in the public interest. It does so through its two standard-setting boards, the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board and the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants. These boards develop and issue their standards and related pronouncements independently and under their own authority. IFEA does not endorse any comments other than those we post. 🦐 Today on Financial Times, Patrick Temple-West and Kaori Y. write about the opaqueness of #supplychains in the #seafood industry. The increasing demand of #seafood is fueling illicit activities like forced labor and illegal fishing. 💴 💵 💶 Notably, 35 major #institutionalinvestors, including Nomura Asset Management (hello, Tomoyo Imura!) and DNB Asset Management, have initiated a seafood traceability engagement (https://lnkd.in/dvi6z8fM) with leading publicly traded seafood companies. 🌊This initiative aims to evaluate the traceability of seafood products from catch to table, as $3tn of seafood-related assets and revenue might be at risk over the next years, due to damage done to oceans by excessive fishing efforts, reductions in habitat quality (🪸coral reefs and ☘️ mangroves), nutrient pollution, and disease outbreaks. 👉 To note: - 🕵♀️ Traceability in #supplychains matters to investors, as evidenced by the involvement of major asset managers with $6.5 trillion under management in such engagement. 🆙 The market shouldn't rely solely on top down regulation. 🚨 Breaking News 🚨 The IESBA Board has approved landmark ethics standards for sustainability reporting and assurance and revisions to the Code on the use of experts! These new global standards address critical challenges in sustainability reporting and assurance, including ethical risks like conflicts of interest, pressure, and bias leading to #greenwashing. The International Ethics Standards for Sustainability Assurance (IESSA) and related revisions provide a robust ethical and independence framework to protect investors, consumers, and society against misleading sustainability information and illicit financial flows hiding behind “green” objectives. The Use of Experts revisions establish clear guidance for assessing the competence, objectivity, and capabilities of external experts, ensuring reliable and trustworthy contributions to sustainability assurance. This milestone reflects the IESBA’s commitment to integrity, transparency, and trust in sustainability. Stay tuned for the global launch in early 2025, following certification by the Public Interest Oversight Board | PIOB. IFEA Mourns the Loss of Imran Vanker, IRBA Director of Standards and IAASB Member 2016-2021 It is with profound sadness that IFEA announces the passing of Imran Vanker, a valued member of the IFEA family. We extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends following the tragic and sudden loss of Imran and his daughter yesterday. Our hearts go out to their loved ones during this unimaginable time. Imran was a member of the IAASB from 2016 to 2021 and, through his work at the Independent Regulatory Board for Auditors (IRBA) in South Africa, remained an esteemed colleague and member of the IAASB community. His passing, alongside that of his daughter, leaves an irreplaceable void. Imran was a staunch supporter of IESBA, actively participating as a member of the IESBA-National Standard Setters liaison group. His commitment to ethical behavior was demonstrated through his inspiration and significant contributions during his years of service. “Imran will be remembered not only for his many contributions to the audit profession but also for the warmth and goodwill he brought to all IAASB discussions. Imran had a passion for serving the public interest, one that will be hard to replicate,” said Tom Seidenstein, IAASB Chair. ‘’Imran was a friend of the IESBA and a passionate advocate for ethics and integrity in the accounting profession. Imran’s legacy of ethical leadership will continue to guide us, and his memory will remain a source of inspiration for all who strive to uphold the highest standards in our work,” said Gabriela Figueiredo Dias, IESBA Chair. As an organization, we share in the sorrow of this loss and are keeping the Vanker family in our thoughts. We will continue to honor their memory during this difficult time.

The PIOB has approved key appointments and re-appointments to the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA) and the International Auditing and Assurance Standards Board (IAASB) effective 1 January, 2025. For IESBA, Gabriela Figueiredo Dias is re-appointed as Chair for a two-year term, with eligibility for further re-appointment and Channa Wijesinghe FCPA, FCA is appointed as Vice-Chair for a two-year term, following his re-appointment to the Board. Nancy Miller and Obichukwu Nwazota are appointed as new IESBA members. Mark Babington and Christelle MARTIN are re-appointed for three-year terms, and Rich Huesken for a final year of service. 📣 ISSA 5000 Update We’re pleased to share that we’ve published the International Standard on Sustainability Assurance 5000 (ISSA 5000) and it is now available on the IAASB website: iaasb.org/ISSA5000 This milestone represents years of dedicated collaboration with organizations and individuals who contributed invaluable support and insights, helping to shape a robust standard that will serve as a global baseline. ISSA 5000 provides a framework for qualified practitioners to deliver assurance on any suitable sustainability reporting standard or framework—meeting the urgent global need for reliable sustainability assurance. What’s on the horizon? Stay tuned for a range of guidance and application materials coming this January, with more to follow during 2025. 🌍 IESBA Sustainability Standards Update Our partner board, the International Ethics Standards Board for Accountants (IESBA), is also finalizing its sustainability-related standards. These include the International Ethics Standards for Sustainability Assurance (IESSA) and updates to the International Code of Ethics for Professional Accountants for sustainability reporting and independence, as well as revisions to the Code addressing when experts work alongside professional accountants and assurance practitioners. IESBA anticipates approving its standards during its December meeting. Alignment and interoperability between ISSA 5000, IESSA, and the IESBA Code of Ethics will ensure a strong, unified global baseline for sustainability assurance.
