Last month, the Interoperability Institute (IOI) proudly supported the 3rd Annual Academic Consortia Summit, hosted as a pre-conference event at the HIMSS Michigan Chapter’s Fall Conference in Gaylord, MI. The event was more than just a meeting—it was a collaborative effort to bridge gaps between academic programs and the rapidly evolving demands of health IT. IOI’s Executive Vice President, Mary Kratz, and Synthetic Data Manager, Amber Weeks, attended the full-day event, alongside the IOI Workforce Development team and several interns, all of whom played an essential role in driving the summit’s success. The MIHIVE 2024 Fall Workshop was a powerful reminder of the value of partnership and forward-thinking strategy in shaping Michigan’s health IT workforce. Read more here ⬇️

The Interoperability Institute recently concluded its first ever Virtual Innovation Center (VIC) Challenge Event, focused on advancing Longitudinal FHIR Viewers to support enhanced interoperability, improved care coordination and streamlined workflows. By focusing on the development of Longitudinal FHIR viewers, this event marked an essential step toward creating more cohesive, patient-centered care. The detailed feedback from SMEs in usability, technical, and security offered each participating organization a clearer path forward in refining their platforms. Moving forward, each iteration of the VIC Challenge Events will aim to build on this foundation, deepening support for innovation that moves healthcare closer to efficient, equitable, and fully integrated care for patients. Thank you to our sponsors, Amazon Web Services (AWS), Smile Digital Health, Michigan Health Information Network Shared Services (MiHIN), and Velatura Public Benefit Corporation, our Evaluators, Stanley Huff, Jeremy Kerr, Jim Hoag, Shane McNamee MD, Dr. David Fallaw Ryan Fung, Richard Fish, Michael Sherman, Oliver Strong and Benjamin Cushing and our Innovators: Patient Centric Solutions, Inc, Outcome Healthcare, 4medica - One Patient...One Record, and HealthLX for making the inaugural VIC Challenge Event a resounding success. Last month, Joel Gruenberg and Kendrah Baker represented the Interoperability Institute at the Health Level Seven International 38th Annual Plenary, WGM+ and FHIR Connectathon in Atlanta, Georgia where they engaged in key discussions and collaborative initiatives to move health data interoperability forward, including: ✅ BPM+ Integration: A primary focus of the meeting was to promote the integration of BPM+ Health under the HL7 umbrella. Our team worked closely with BPM+ representatives to align clinical and technical standards, setting the stage for meaningful progress in healthcare workflows. ✅ Meld and FHIR Foundry: We worked with Preston Lee, PhD, MBA, FAMIA, Founder and CTO of Skycapp to successfully integrate the Meld Open-Source Sandbox with the FHIR Foundry platform, enhancing access to interoperability tools within the HL7 community. This integration allows users to deploy the Meld Sandbox with minimal setup, broadening its reach across the FHIR community. Read more here ⬇️
