Creating equity in intimacy. Currently guiding tech companies to allow ads for sexual health for people with vaginas
About us
We are a nonprofit committed to equity and wellbeing in people's intimate lives. We are currently working to change discriminatory ad policies that censor health ads for women and people with vulvas -- with the goal of allowing more health information and expression about women's sexual health and wellness. We released an investigation on this issue in the New York Times and 70 media outlets in 2022, and we're planning strategic actions ahead to change these corporate practices. We also are creating program areas in family law and other areas.

Take a glimpse into the work we do at the Center for Intimacy Justice tackling Big Tech's discriminatory suppression of women and people of diverse gender’s health information online 👀 In the clip, our Founder and CEO Jackie Rotman discusses how this issue impacts numerous creators, companies and organizations - including the wonderful Catherine Magee, CEO of Playground. A big thank you to Omidyar Network and the Responsible Technology Youth Power Fund for supporting us in creating and sharing content that allows us to raise awareness around this discriminatory censorship 🙏

CIJ x NYC! This past week, some of our CIJ team members came together at the Responsible Tech Youth Power Fund convening in Manhattan. We absolutely loved meeting other incredible grantees and funders who are part of the Responsible Tech Community. Shoutout to Cyber Collective for the engaging organizing and thoughtful session designs. Not only did we strengthen our team bonds, but we also gained a ton of new insights on future areas of focus in responsible tech, empowering young people, and potential partners that will help propel our work fighting against Big Tech platforms' discriminatory suppression of sexual and reproductive health information 💪

🎉 CIJ is thrilled that Frida has launched a new initiative in the fight against online censorship of women's health. 🎉 🚨 As reported by CNN, Frida has launched "Frida Uncensored", a new educational platform featuring uncensored and unfiltered educational videos on women's reproductive and postpartum health. 👀 Through our work, we have uncovered how major online platforms have routinely censored essential health ads and information. Our founder and CEO Jackie Rotman explained in the recent CNN feature: “Whether it’s alcohol or underwear or cars, our culture is used to seeing so many examples of ads in which women’s bodies are being sexualized to sell something else…But when it’s actually about agency over our own bodies, that information is extremely suppressed.” Read more here: https://lnkd.in/gbTUBv7j 🌟 We are thrilled to be advancing work on this crucial issue with Frida, which is a CIJ major partner. 🔗 Check out the CNN feature and for anyone looking to join the fight against online censorship, please visit us at https://lnkd.in/eauCkaY. Why is a lactating breast censored on social media? To say we've been battle-tested in showing the raw realities of motherhood is an understatement. We've tried every creative way in, with fleeting progress that is subsequently stifled in both traditional and social media channels. Just this month our ads have been flagged or removed for using the word “fertility” or depicting a blurred-out breast and nipple to advertise our new Hydrogel Nipple Pads. Today, we launch FridaUncensored.com, a new platform for women's health education, offering uncensored, unfiltered sexual health education and how-to instructional videos for women. As part of this content crusade, we've also partnered with the Center for Intimacy Justice to help advance legislative reform that will remove the limitations that we and other brands face when it comes to advertising and product education for women’s health. In our CEO Chelsea M.R. Hirschhorn's own words: "More than a third of women say that they feel unprepared physically for the experience that they just had when it comes to pregnancy, labor delivery, and postpartum recovery. If we can help a large majority of those women eliminate that fear and anxiety in anticipation of that experience, the platform should and could speak for itself." This is just one step in the crusade for more, better educational content for women. And until the algorithms catch up, we'll continue to advocate for women, without censoring a single word or detail. #advertising #marketing #women
